mildew in flat

Any advice/suggestions on a problem with mildew in our ground floor apartment would be welcome. Ventilation seems to be the solution. Opening windows when possible keeps the situation under control in the living areas. (Using a dehumidifier helps too). The main bedroom is the biggest problem. It has a patio door as the only natural ventilation. (There is a tiny trickle vent in the door which doesn't leave in much fresh air). Opening the door for brief periods during the day helps to ventilate the room, but it's not ideal. A friend working in property maintenance suggested installing a fan in the bedroom wall which could extract moist air from the flat and pump in fresh air. Any ideas on how to better ventilate the bedroom would be much appreciated.
