Summer Associate / USA law internship

I was thinking of applying to do an internship in a US law firm (maybe NY/Chicago/ Washington DC) next summer, after I graduate. I'm taking a gap year after I finish my law degree and thought it would be a good way to spend the summer in the US and also make some money (they all pay $2800/week+...)
However I'm not sure how feasible this is in that they might only be willing to take on US citizens doing the JD? Trying to figure out whether it would be even worth applying. I could work there legally (on J1) but don't want to waste all the time on applying if I won't have a chance!
Does anyone have any experience/knowledge on this?

I imagine if you can stand out from all the US postgrads with your extracurricular and amazing published legal atricles you'll have no trouble. Otherwise I imagine the competition will be absolutely unbelievable. If you're willing to do an unpaid internship or clerk any college worth it's salt will have a programme you can apply for. If it doesn't create one.
