How can a person find and select a therapist/counsellor?

My sister has decided she wants to get some counselling for anxiety but her GP has been no good in referring her so I'm trying to help.

Can anyone suggest things to look for when selecting a counsellor and where to look. I found this organisation http://www.psychotherapycouncil.ie/ so was going to suggest she searches there. But after that how can she pick which one to go to? Do they need to be fully qualified psychologists?

    Thanks

If you can get a psychologist clinical or counselling that specialises in anxiety that would be the best person imo.

Second option a person with masters in psychotherapy or better again masters in cognitive psychotherapy (CBT).

Make sure whoever you get is accredited, and get to know the person, ring up and ask them some questions, like how long they practices, what types of cases they work with, how they see their therapy working etc!

All that aside, you need to connect with the person, and a good therapist should be able to make this happen!

There's stickies in this forum that you should read

There's this sticky, prominantly stickied, called something like: How to Find Help/Counsellor/Psychotherapist/Psychologist right HERE is full of useful information.

One of the links to the Irish Council for Psychotherapy says that this site gives information about a variety of psychotherapeutic approaches, so that you can chose one that you feel comfortable with, or find credible.

It also says what kind of questions you might want to ask a potential psychotherapist/counsellor/psychologist.

And it gives some of the main organisations for these helping professions.

If there's anything we've omitted, or you think we should add to the sticky, please do comment and let us know. Thanks! :-)
