Sure if covered under insurance then replace it in any case, how did it happen as rare enough to happen on a rear window and not as if you slammed the boot

    Hello!

Does anyone think that the Autopilot now mistakenly complains more about holding the wheel, even tho I am?

This was never really an issue before, but the last few motorway trips I got a few pings to hold the wheel even tho I was.

I understood my old Autopilot 1.0 (2016 Model S) wasn't getting updates any more?

So for HW3 cars there are supposed to be less nags than before. AP1 however is supposed to be an as-is product, meaning no updates, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't a knock on effect of some other changes perhaps. Honestly, that's why I still prefer AP1, less nonsense being removed. And it still uses sensors rather than vision only.

I wonder if the increased nags are actually due to wear rather than software changes? Like, the steering mechanism is a bit worn so it's harder for it to detect weight?

    Thanks Elm,

It's possible I imagined it, but it happened a few times on two trips.

NCT is up next month so time to stick some new tires on her and try hide the cracked roof glass and hope for the best 🤣

Actually, speaking of tires, has anyone tried the Michelin ePrimacy tires yet?

They say they're made for EVs, but don't have the T0/T1 rating for Tesla specifically 🤔

This time next year I hope not to have to touch the steering wheel at all in the entire trip 😁

The previous owner had the car upgraded for free to HW3, this is required for FSD. I had the MCU upgraded (for a charge) to MCU2. This is not needed for fully self driving but gives better visualisations and makes the entire media / software system much faster and more up to date

I recently had all cameras replaced for free with the latest generation versions by Tesla. This is also required for FSD

My 2018 Model X with AP2.5 was upgraded to 2024.26.8 last month and it's a horrible downgrade. If I don't wiggle the steering wheel immediately after activating auto-pilot, it goes straight to the red warning and threatens to disengage. Once I get past that, it seems a lot quicker to complain than it was in the past. It's definitely not wear, it started the morning after the upgrade happened :(

The car has FSD, which means that all hardware upgrades that are necessary for FSD to function, are free of charge. HW3 is the minimum version of the hardware that can use FSB beta latest version

Seems like the "legacy" cars without interior cameras are being punished in this update. I found (before I was crashed into!) that the model 3 actually was better at nagging me less. Apparently if I had paid for EAP/FSD it wouldnt nag me at all if it saw via camera I was watching the road.

Not software, you are legacy (Mobileye software IIFC) so you are finished with updates, most likely your steering wheel!

    Thanks all for the replies.

I wonder would anyone have any advise on the tyres?…

NCT coming up, so think I'll give the ePrimacy a try unless anyone strongly objects!!

    Thanks.

I have to say I found the pilotsports great on that car, it's a heavy car with a fair bit of torque so it needs good tires. Not sure if the e primacy are any better in that regard as I've never used them. I replaced the pilotsports on my 3 with pirelli EV rated tires and they were awful for road noise so I would have a go-forward preference for michelin in that way at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,791 ✭✭✭✭User1998

Pirellis are honestly a terrible tyre. Cant go wrong with PS4’s but a good cheaper alternative are Hankook Ventus Prime. I can’t tell the difference between them and PS4’s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,496 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Yes Ill never be getting them again anyway, premium price but the roadholding feels a little bit less good and the road noise is awful.

Have never used hankook personally but I do see good reccomendations for them in EV forums

    Thanks Elm!

I rang my local garage, and they are recommending Pilot Sports 3's, which are 'T0' made for Tesla.

Only thing is, the Pilot Sport 5's are out not, and the 4's claim to be better than the 3's, and the 5's claim to be better than the 4's, so seems like a step or two back to by last gen tyres.

The guy in the garrage says your better with old T0's rather than a new tyre not made for your car.

    Hard to know!?!

Those tyres were designed almost 20 years ago. Is the ‘T’ really that important? How is a Tesla different to any other car? I will check if mine have the ‘T’ logo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,496 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

They probably have T3 in stock or something.

To be honest, I buy tires online and have someone fit them. The only exception (if that S is still on the tires you got with it!) were the 4 I put on it, which were bought at Tesla when the car was in for suspension work, MCU upgrade and to fix the sunroof.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,181 ✭✭✭✭unkel

The Tesla service guys partied all night long after you paid them for the tyres 😂

Actually wasnt that bad, I checked oponeo before agreeing.

Interesting about the sunroof, it broke again and they want three and a half grand to fix it ;(

Oh wow! Mine was a "warranty" fix because I had bought the car as a CPO from Tesla (UK) so it was covered under that. I get the feeling (clearly as it broke again!) that it was more of a bodge than a fix though. They phased out sunroofs in the later S and I can see why as there's so many issues with them online.

To be honest, if it is broken and broken closed (ie no issue with it opening or being stuck open) I'd have left it. The warranty issue I had was it was not fully closing and I thought it was a risk of water ingress.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,514 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

I had mine repaired under extended CPO too, they are terrible design, there are two rear draining holes that cannot be cleaned out without full removal and when they clog they kick off all sort of issues

Yep had mine repaired under warranty too in my first Model S. And while fixing it, they broke it, had to replace the entire sunroof then. That was me in their free fuel, free tolls loaner for another few weeks 😁

Now I think of it, in nearly 3 years of owning my current facelift Model S (that I owned less than 2 years), the only thing I had go wrong with it was a suspension arm the day after I got the car. Fixed under warranty. In my previous Model S, I knew all the Sandyford service staff and all rangers by their first names. Nearly everything in that car was replaced under warranty, except the motor

Got the Michellen E.Primacy tyres fitted today in the end.

Went with Tyreland who were great and did the whole thing on my driveway, very handy.

He did say I need to get my wheel alignment done (and possibly and alloy refurb). He said you need to go with a place that knows how to align your car correctly.

Can anyone recommend a place in / near Dublin that could do this?

    Thanks!!

Literally any tyre place can do it but a lot of them won’t for some reason. I believe Bestdrive will do it no problem but recently added a surcharge due to it taking longer than usual or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,057 ✭✭✭BigAl81

Thanks, the guy from the tyre fitting said any place can measure it, but only some places have the data for how to set it correctly. I know nothing about it myself ;( Thanks!!

Some advice please, I'm thinking about getting a model s, probably a 2017 up, are 2017 up all facelift models? anything I should watch out for?

I'm with aviva for insurance but i put in a model s details in online it won't let me change online, says I have to contact them, that is for changing a diesel to electric

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 41,544 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

yes, late 162 onwards are facelift.
youll have to call instead of using online system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20 andyr24

Yes you need to call them. Bought a 2018 earlier this year and would not quote online. Rang them up and no change from nissan leaf to model S. Told me when I have policy with them won't let you quote online.

Door handles probably the main niggle really. Play up a bit but haven't had to change one yet. Drivers side window regulator gave way, replaced with s/h one for £80.

Had rear brake caliper sticking a little. Took it off and worked it out free again. 35k Kms in 9mths very happy so far.
