Filling cracks

    Hi.
I did a self build 9 years ago. I picked ICF as the type of structure. There is a thin coat of plaster on the polystyrene. It was meant to be a 6mm basecoat with mesh worked in and a 3 mm surface finish. It's not a good job for a number of reasons. There is widespread cracking right through the plaster. I eeked out a couple of these cracks and filled them with external polyfilla but 6 months on, this polyfilla is cracking again. I think I might use some cartridge filler like tec7 and hope that the cracks do not spread any more. Can tec7 be painted over? Or does anyone have another product that I could use. I have no recourse to anyone on this. ICF builder built shell and I picked type of plaster on his recommendation.
    Thanks

    Hi,

As far as I know the recommendation is an acrylic type plaster with embedded mesh as you have already noted. Hindsight is great as we all know! I'm not sure how you sort this however given that you only have a thin layer of plaster on polystyrene as I suspect it will continue to expand/contract over its lifetime.

As such I don't think there's a quick fix product for this situation unfortunately. Presumably replastering entire house properly is not the route you want to go..

It would be a nightmare for a number of reasons. One being financial. I think the polystyrene may have bowed in places under the weight of concrete when poured, thereby leaving it hard for the plasterer to put the proper layer on throughout. i assumed the ICF contractor would leave plum walls at least and these things are hard to see at the time. Contractor since gone outta business, also distributer of the German plaster I used in Ireland gone out of business.
