App location permission

    Hello,
I was waiting outside Cork airport this evening when your android app sent me a message to that effect and gave me advice about traveling abroad with money etc.
I had both my location and bluetooth off in the phone settings. yet your app could tell my location.
I find this feature invasive and not required for occasionally checking my balance or transferring money on the go. The fact that the app very quietly does this is off putting.
I would like to know if I can disable these features specifically, I do not need to know how to disable push notifications or anything like that. I want my banking app to display my account information and perform simple transactions, nothing more. If it is not possible to restrict these permissions I would like to know simply and clearly so I can delete the app from my phone.
I have two accounts with BOI at the moment a joint and personal current. This kind of practice is making me think twice about staying with BOI.
So please let me know if your app is likely to continue with these invasive "features" and if i can turn them off entirely. Any double speak or non answers will result in account closure.

What's the fear? That your bank manager will show up at the airport?

You can turn off location, and push notifications for any or all apps in the settings

Settings > Applications > Application Manager > Bank of Ireland > Permissions

You had to agree to them getting your location when you installed the app.

I had assumed you had an iPhone. But I'd shocked if the same control didn't exist in android. It's a pretty basic feature

    Hi Billy,

Thanks for contacting us on Boards.

We're sorry to hear you're unhappy with this push notification you received. We're just double checking this for you at the moment and will get back to you asap.

    UPDATE:

If you are on Android 6 or greater, you can turn off the location permissions for the app by going to Settings>Apps>then select the Bank of Ireland app.

You will then see a Permissions option, select this and you can then turn off the Location permission. The next time you open the app, a dialog box will appear, please select "Close App" in this dialog box. From then on you can use the app as normal, the location services will just not be used.

On Android 5 or lower, it is not possible to disable Location services for a specific app. You can turn off location services in general through your Settings.

I hope this helps and please let us know if we can help with any other query.

    Thanks,
    Sarah
