How much for the pc hardware to run this thing?

That's definitely the crux of it. Even if you buy this, you'll still have to invest in a relatively high end PC. You're still looking at the guts of under 2,000 all in.

If you don't have it already. 2000 is a bit of a high price.
You can get a cheaper VR Ready PC like this one.

That's still €700+ for that particular machine (not including P&P), which according to some of the reviews isn't as oculus ready as it claims as it needs some extra tinkering - one person mentions it has just one HDMI port.

That's still €1200 for just the oculus and the PC, without the monitor and all the other peripherals that are required - so, realistically, an extra €300 (including the keyboard, monitor, and everything else that might be required).

I'm not saying that it wouldn't be excellent.. I don't know as I've never used it, but there are a lot of hidden costs associated with getting a vr headset on a PC.

I think there was a price drop recently so the OR plus touch controllers direct is around €700, €500 still a great price though as you don't actually need the touch controllers.

You can build a PC for about €700 that will run VR pretty well. The thing with VR is that you need a very reliable stable framerate, spikes and drops ruin it and can make you feel ill.

119 for the touch controllers....I haven't them out of the box yet, depending on what you want a decent steering wheel or flight controller might be higher up the priority list.

A 1249 new Alienware laptop will work fine, you don't need to spend 2k. Check the dell outlet store as well you can haggle a good bit off a refurbished one http://alienware.ie/laptops.aspx

I use VR most days playing racing sims and i definitely recommend it to anyone. At first you will probably think the resolution is very low but the immersion factor is just amazing. The feeling of being in the car/plane cockpit is surreal compared to a monitor. I'd recommend a desk fan to keep airflow towards you if you are sitting at a desk using one, it reduces fogging and makes it more comfortable to wear over longer periods.

There is a test on the Oculus site that you can check before you buy to see if your PC can run VR.

That's why I was saying no rush with the touch controllers :), spent most of the night last night driving the conkers out of an Evo...i'd swap the touches for a handbrake..

Aren't Alienware the most overpriced 'gaming' machines money can buy or have things changed?

The new range of laptops are perfect for vr, the 13" starts at €1,249, I think it's pretty good value, Tron lights are a bonus : )

I don't keep up to date with Alienware but for 1249 that's pretty good value considering it is an Alienware.

GTX1060 isn't far off the desktop version so most of the latest games at 1080p ultra is no small feat for a sub €1,300 laptop.

There's 1 used very good one so amazon uk, probably set you back €525 by the time it's delivered but you get the 30 day return with it, might be worth a punt https://www.amazon.co.uk/Oculus-301-00204-01-Rift/dp/B00ZFOGHRG?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAJ7T5BOVUVRD2EFYQ&tag=camelalerts-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00ZFOGHRG

Most vr customers are already pc gamers who have a machine that perhaps needs an upgrade. My 5 year old pc runs everything very well as I added a 1070 Gtx for about 500.

But the amount of content isnt amazing and the titles are expensive for what you get. So unless you are into tech and have money around, im not sure its worth it. (Most of my gaming is non vr so the 1070 is arguably better value than the headset)

This from someone who has been using a rift regularly since 2014 - mainly sim racing. And I do love it.

I got the touch controllers recently and after robo recall and superhot im struggling to find anything decent to play.

We are definitely in the early adopter high cost / low content phase

aye, I'm holding off until the next version comes out in a couple of years, and all lessons have been learned.

Will probably buy an entire new machine to position down in the living room, plus one of those walking platforms ;)

PSVR will tide me over in the meantime
