    Hi,

I've an old but perfectly functioning Samsung galaxy note 3. Would like to root it and put a different version of Android on it. Have not tried this before but see that there's step by step instructions on the likes of the Xda website.

Those instructions require various software tools to be downloaded. Anyone know if these are OK or riddled with the kind of stuff free software from the Internet often is? I've a very nice laptop and don't want to mess it up!

    Thanks for any comments

If it's on xda then you are safe. It's when you start googling yourself that you would run into trouble. Xda will always have comments below the downloads. If they were riddled they would be removed.

While XDA itself is fine some of the file hosts posters use are really dodge, fake download buttons etc. Tread cautiously.

Basically dev-host is the major one to avoid. XDA ban links from them, AFAIK.
