Retain Visa card

Apologies if this is the wrong category, i couldn't find something more befitting.

So i work in a retailers and while serving a customer his card declined and for the first time a message saying "retain card" popped up.
I've never been briefed on what to do in that situation so i just gave it back.
Should i have retained the card? And what is the legal viewpoint on that? Also how would i have said it to the customer without offending them?

I know that most cards have a disclaimer on the back stating they remain the property of the issuing bank, so if i retained the card, i wouldn't be seizing his property right? And he wouldn't have had a leg to stand on legally would he?

Ask your employer what the company policy is.

Normally, yes, you retain the card and it is sent back to the issuing bank.

Usually retain card means its been reported stolen or lost it the bank want to talk to them. You just say the bank has requested we retain the card please contact them, sorry. Send it back to the local branch then.

If you'd retained it visa would have sent you £50 thank you! It happened to me a couple of times.

I really couldnt think of how to broach it with him especially with a queue of people behind him.
Next time ill make sure to do that, i just wasnt sure of the legality of taking the card when i was put on the spot.

Technically the Visa card is owned by the Bank, and not the cardholder, so "legally" the owner of the card has asked you to return it to them.

Don't worry it happens very rarely, it's happened to me twice in 10 years or so.
As the other poster said do check with your employer too what they want you to do.

I'm not so sure about this. It would really depend who the customer was. If he was a 6' 4'', 18st drug dealer look-alike, I'd give it back to him. Fcuk the bank, let them collect their own stolen cards. If it's already been flagged it's not like he can use it anywhere else anyway.

That's why they offer money reward.

Obviously not. It's up to the person to make a decision themselves I don't think anyone is forced to retain a card...

That's what I thought. That's why I'd always give it back.

That's true 😂 obviously common sense would win in that scenario. "Here's your card sir, have a nice day, take anything you want as you leave, just don't hurt me" 😂
