Have an old railing I want to fix up and paint (clickthru for larger photos)

I know the general advice is use a wire brush to get rid of flaking paint and rust, then paint with hammerite. Was wondering how to copy with decorative spikes that are loose - do they need to be welded or some kind of glue (epoxy work)?

Also, can I use Hammerite on the stone surrounded the railing is embedded in? (2nd pic)

    Thanks

    P.

If you have the patience and the time, you could strip it right back down with a blow torch and scraper, all so there better paints on the market then hammright.. As for the loose uprights, welding would be the way to go.
