Many of the AL flights to Gran Canaria in July are sold out already. Does anyone know what happens in this situation, does AL generally put on extra flights or is it a case of you just look for another carrier? Seems very early for flights to be marked as sold out but October mid-term is also sold out!

They don't put on extra flights, but there may be more seats released at some stage, so no harm to keep looking. In the meantime, you may need to check other carriers such as Ryanair and/or the tour operators.

You have to remember July is peak season with primary and secondary schools off on their summer holidays. If it's later in the month (week three) then you also have UK schools on their holidays. All of which places a huge demand.

Try using skyscanner to see what other airlines/routes might be available for you.

Also check the Tour Operators they may be able to sell you flight only - Thompson/TUI have their own charter flights to many destinations.
Are Ryanair sold out? Have you checked all the irish airports (including Belfast) might be other options available.

Some tour operators block book seats to make a package. As someone else suggested, check around the operators, also, keep checking back to see if any more become available.

I booked my flights to the canaries back in January in the sale.

Look at other options too like flying out of Shannon, Cork or Belfast.

Usually book summer flights in January sale too but missed it this year, expensive lesson. Unfortunately we're tied to dates due to other commitments. Thanks for suggestions. Ryanair was super expensive and flying from Belfast was dearer again. In the end I booked to fly out a day earlier than planned and come back as planned and booked accommodation for the extra night and was still cheaper than the other options.

There are Thomson Airways charter flights from Dublin to Gran Canaria every Thursday in July. You can book flights only with Falcon: http://www.falconholidays.ie/flight/

Depending on who is going, there is another option, but it can be messy.

Last year, 5 of us went to Lanzarote but the prices were nuts. About 1800 euro as far as I could remember. It was toward the end of June.

I used momondo website for alternatives and it suggested Ryanair Dublin to Leeds Bradford, 2 hour wait ish, and then Leeds Bradford to Lanzarote. On the return it was the same but about 5 hour stopover. MUCH cheaper as the UK schools were still in so it was off peak. Also think about Belfast, its only up the road now.

It cost me 800 euro including a little luggage. As we were a bit strapped, it was a godsend. Something to think about, but remember to build in some stopover time as you are unprotected if a leg is delayed causing a missed second flight.

What we saved paid for the apartment we rented!

    We do that a lot.
Last year return flights from Dublin to Tenerife were €475 each in July.
We flew to Manchester for €15 return each, then got return flights from manchester to Tenerife for €58 return each.

So a saving of €400 each over flying from Dublin on the flights.

Dont do that if you have lots of hold luggage though. The hold luggage is more expensive than the person.

My sister is doing the same thing in August this year, but taking the weekend in the uk and visiting some theme park there too. If I remember correctly she is saving nearly €1000 on flights for the family even including car hire and a hotel and theme park for the night in the UK.
