Bit of a puzzler but I have a noticeable 'heavy rattling clonk' noise from the front left of the car. It is noticeable on cobbles and rutted surfaces, not over speed bumps.

Two places have checked the car out and found no play at all in any of the suspensions linkages. The second place thought it may be the strut top mounts, but they were not certain and that was going to take a couple of hundred euro just to look at. Just wondering if anyone has encountered this or has any suggestions?

It could be the top mounts, if the were really bad they might groan/creek when locking the steering. My guess is it's the steering rack though.
