I was thinking of replacing all our rads over a period of time, they are about 25 years old. Would it be less expensive to get the old ones drained and cleaned out, or replace with new rads?

You don't drain and clean out rads anymore. Nowadays they're powerflushed.
How many rads do you have? Are they currently not heating properly?

We have 7 rads and a couple of them are just not heating the room sufficiently. We have tried bleeding them but it makes no difference. Can old rads be power flushed?

ALL RADS can be power flushed.

Rads without fins at the back should be replaced. Better output with fins.

Newer rads are more efficent, due to less water content.
But if old rads have fins, I wouldn't replace as the difference in efficiency is small for a normal domestic house.

Boilers have improved leaps & bounds, so tell us what make & model boiler you have and we'll advice.

Neither I nor hubby could tell you anything about our boiler. I'd have to dig for 25 yr old paperwork! Thanks for the info. on the rads. Much appreciated.

Sorry Jellybaby for jumping in on your thread :)

I'm kinda in the same both. had an extension put on the house so all new radiators in the new parts however I never had the old radiators replaced. Have 5 radiators to (possibly) replace between the downstairs hall, sitting room and 3 bedrooms, these radiators are 20 years old. The bedroom and hall radiators are single panel (no fin's) whilst the sitting room is double panel (with fin's I think), the hall one seems to be way undersized for the area it's to hear - downstairs hall which escapes upstairs. All radiators new and old have had new TRV's attached to them. They heat up fine but cool down very quickly.

They are heated with 2 year old Worcester Bosch Greenstar CDi Classic 30KW condenser natural gas boiler running on a 3 zone heating controls - upstairs, downstairs and water.

Now the "How long is a piece of string" question and not having the radiator dimensions on hand. Any one got any ideas of costs to replace these 5 radiators? Obviously boiler needs to be drained and possibly system needs flushing (it has one of the magnetic boxes connected to it). Also would there be any issues with the current pipework matching up with the new radiators pipework?

No problem van_beano. At least you have some info on your boiler. Ours in behind the fireplace! Like yourself I'm still interested in cost of replacing rads though.

Do you run the central heating off gas or oil? I've no idea of these things but how do you turn on your boiler or get it service?

Do the radiators heat fully top to bottom?
If they don't then you probably have sludge. Changing rads won't get rid of the sludge in the pipes underground or your Boiler. So u need to decide what actually needs to be done. It's not about cost v cost.

Its a gas fire. We have buttons at the side of the fireplace which turns it on and off.

Bottom of a couple of rads remain cool while the top is hot. I thought if the sludge was in the rads I could get them flushed out? How do I decide what to do?
