Hi all. I am thinking of buying a new (or nearly new) VW Polo. Any feedback, pitfalls, recommendations? I want a small engine that will be cheap for tax and insurance. Thanks in advance.:D

The latest model comes with a one litre (75bhp) petrol engine which should prove to be reliable and economical. There appears to be plenty of low mileage examples available at present. Buy from a reputable dealership.

I've a 08 1.4 diesel Polo (I know you're looking at newer, and maybe a smaller, petrol version). No complaints at all, drives great and it's cheap as chips to run (averages 50mpg) and tax (€180/year). I'd say insurance should be OK unless you're very young or have no NCB or something. If you're not 6 foot tall there's plenty of legroom/headspace; the inside feels pretty much like a Golf, tbh. I'd recommend getting the four-door if you have the option (same for any other small car).

That sounds promising. I'd value any / all feedback. Thanks very much.

There is a brand new Polo due towards the end of this year so values of current used ones will fall if you can wait. It's also worth looking at the Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia, both are mechanically the same as the Polo. Actually I think there is a new Ibiza just released.

    Thanks for that. Very helpful.

If buying a model that is being replaced soon doesn't bother you then have a look at the Ford Fiesta, there is a new model being launched in June/July so there might be deals to be had on the current model. They are available in 1.0 litre petrol these days.

If you prefer to buy something more up to date then the Hyundai i20 is a pretty good option, Nissan are launching a brand new Micra soon too which is based on the current Renault Clio and is a huge step up from the current Micra which is rather poor. You also have the Renault Clio which just got a refresh for 2017 which is also a good little car.

Lots of food for thought there. Thanks for all the info. A few other options to consider.

The Suzuki Swift is also well worth checking out. You could get and should get a great deal on the current model or wait and buy the new model which should be out in a few months. I think the current model is much better looking compared to the new one.
The new Seat Ibiza looks like a lovely car too.
Peugeot 208 and Citroen C3 are two more you could look at oh and the new Nissan Micra is a fine car. Nissan really should have gave it a new name because its light years ahead of the last model which just looked terrible and cheap.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
