Finch flying into window

Hi, I have an apple tree outside our bedroom window. For the past couple of weeks we've had a finch who flies from the apple tree, flaps against the window, taps it 2/3 times with his beak, then flies back to the tree. He does this for maybe 5-10 minutes a couple of times a day.

He seems to be doing it deliberately, i.e. not flying into the glass 'cos he doesn't see it. It actually seems like he's doing it playfully/for the craic! Is this possible or is there something wrong with him?

    Not Your Ornery Onager

I think the bird is attracted to it's own reflection.

He sees what he thinks is a rival in his reflection. It's extremely common. Many chaffinches spend hours attacking their defections in the wing mirrors of cars at this time of year too.

...and blue tits do it as well, each morning i find my car doors covered in poop as the blue tits keep attacking there reflection in the wing mirrors

so i've got into the habit of putting old socks over the wing mirrors each evening, does the trick :)

    * i wonder is there a market for them?? hmmmm
