Naas is just an hour from Kilkenny and just off the N7, so you could easily stop by and go to Lawlers, The Osprey or even The Johnstown Inn for a carvery dinner on your way.

There is a food court at the Maldron Hotel ('Midway') outside Portlaoise, it's nothing fancy but there is a big selection of food to suit all ages. Just make sure there isn't any match on in the (nearby) O'Moore Park GAA grounds, that usually results in total parking chaos in the area.

Edit: I just checked the website and the selection isn't as wide as I thought, there used to be a Chinese place there....

Thanks for quick replies and information

    The Johnstown Inn looks good.

It's a real shame about the food court, great location and choice of places

We usually go to Limerick/Kilkenny and stopped off there. Over the years you can see how much has closed and I'm waiting to see it's fully closed one day

No joke but you'll make it to Kilkenny from Dublin in little over an hour :) But if you want a handy stop then try Bardons in Kilcullen, just off the M 9.

Port Laois is on the M 7 so going this way will be a longer run for you. If you do then come off at the N77 to avoid both the toll booth and a long detour

You would be better off waiting until you get to Kilkenny, only 70-75 minutes tops.

No, the route via from Dublin to KK via Portlaoise, Abbeyleix, Durrow and Ballyragget is shorter than going via the M9.

Will happily concede that the M9 is an easier trip cause it's motorway most of the way but the above route is shorter. Have done both routes dozens of times.

makes you wonder why they wasted money building the M9 then.

checked. Via Abbeyleix is 12 km and 25 minutes further

What map have you been checking, it's slightly longer and a much worse road once you leave the M7.

No it isn't...certainly not from city centre

138km vs 125km plus the M9 route is all motorway

    Back from Kilkenny today

On the route planning side of things, I usually pick google maps and go with it. I know motorways by and large are longer, but compensated by their speed limit and (most of the time) ease of driving

We stopped in the Johnston inn, was grand, nothing special, but then you can’t go too mad with burger and chips, bit of a cheek to charge E1 for a pint of blackcurrant. I can’t/won’t eat hard veg, so that’s why I avoid the usual Sunday carvery pub option.

Again, thanks for the suggestions on food and driving options

Not great options between kk and dublin but as posters have said the journey is so quick now it hardly warrants stopping anywhere...best place during the day would be the Arboreteum in Leighlinbridge on the old N9.
There's basic enough options on the old N9 at Walls of Kilgowen or Shackletons rest at Ballitore. Few enough inspiring culinary options unfortunately along this road without a big detour! And limited in terms of times serving food
