I'm thinking about buying a 151 A6, but a friend of mine told me that Audi engines aren't meant to be great. Is this true???

Well I've a petrol 08 A4 and the engine has proven bullet proof. I have had to replace the locks in the doors though.

Did he happen to be on a barstool at the time he was imparting this wisdom?

Can't speak about the engines but audis are definitely over priced vws.
There are people who love them and others like myself who can't understand the fuss.
boss has same car you are interested in , I just don't think of it being on same league as merc e class or a 5 series

I like the Audis & BMW's but I wouldn't be mad about the Merc.

I would be more concerned about the future of diesel engines in general if its a diesel.
The UK are going towards banning diesels completely and you will see a flood of UK diesels coming on the market as they are taxed out of existence in the UK.
Most big cities are banning or planning to ban diesels completely.

    https://www.technologyreview.com/s/603026/four-huge-cities-are-banning-diesel-cars/

In 5 years time a diesel might be worthless or completely uneconomical.

OP hasn't said what model A6 he's interested in.
How can anyone comment without knowing this
    Maybe it's an rs6?!

Chances are its the 150bhp or 190bhp 2.0 TDI diesel, in which both as reliable as most other modern diesel engines used in similar sized cars, (and used across tonnes of Volkswagen group cars).

The main advantage in buying a 2015 A6 is that your buying the current model, where as if you buy a 5 series, E Class, XF from 2015 your buying a model that has already been replaced

Yes but the latest A6 doesn't look that much different to the model.launched in 1997 and the reason VAg products are so profitable is that they charge big but don't invest the money merc. And bmw. Do in their product. None of audis models are class leading .

Have an Audi AA 2011, it is older model. They are a dream to drive. If you are doing motorway driving it is perfect.

I have just sold it, going full electric. Reason is I have 2 big 2ltr diesel cars. Don't do enough motorway mileage to keep it. In city centre it is terrible on fuel.

It is a luxury I would love to keep. I seen a few comments here about Merc/BMX etc and it is to everyones own taste. I know a good few people and they love there Audi and have tried BMW etc. But at sametime a few people that would never move from BMW

Engine is rock solid. Anyone saying anything else doesn't have a clue. In regards to interior I prefer it to Merc/BMW. Just sit into one and drive from Dublin - Cork and back in one day. You will know the comfort then.

Really it is personal decision. I would warn if you are buying for city centre be prepared for very poor ltr/100km.

Also what do you have at the moment? I move from Golf to A6. I got a shock at how big the car actual is once you are trying to drive around town. Was used to spinning around and had a couple of dents in short space of time till I got used to driving it

Might be worth posting what type of driving you are doing before someone recommends. But I would tell that guy that said the engine is back to sh*t up, he hasn't a clue

I won't be doing much City driving, mostly for going to work, which is 24 miles each way. I'm trading in a 2011 Skoda Super.

The only issue I have with mine is the driver footwell. It's small and the bulkhead is right up against my clutch foot. The footrest seems too far back as well but no mechanical issues. Mine is the 177bhp. Fuel consumption is good at 60 mph or thereabouts (55 mpg) but if I push it on, the consumption does suffer a bit understandably.

To be honest 24 miles is not very high. What sort of efficiency are you getting on the Superb at the moment? You will get a little less with A6.

How many miles are you doing a year?

Really unless you do a massive amount of mileage outside of work I would suggest looking at Petrol or Hybrid or Electric. I went Golf Electric, before I started looking I didnt even realize they had an electric version of the Golf

Because of the short distance you are traveling you could have issues with diesel. I am no expert but I seen something before on here about 30 miles from cold before a diesel engine properly kicks in. Someone with a lot more knowledge on here will know

How long do you think you would keep car?

Also it is personal decision. The Audi is lovely inside and you might just want a premium car and as mentioned above it is one of the best out there :-)

I found it the other way, if on motorway and in cruise control I got circa 4.5-5ltr/100km at best

If I took off cruise it would jump up to circa 6-7km/100

If I was in city driving it could be anything above 10ltr/100. Usually sitting at 14ltr per 100km:eek:

You do realise the Superb has the same engine as the Audi.....the diesel in the Audi is more or less the same one in the Skoda/VW/Seat etc

They make a couple of tweaks for each car depending on seller. Audi gets the more premium parts and costs a fortune

my opinion here probably does matter as a Mazda driver but personally I'd be buying a merc or Jaaaag if I was paying out the money you're about to part with op. Even if it meant a car a year or two older.

The only Audi in modern times that has made me take any notice at all is the A7 which imo is a beautiful looking motor albeit just a couped A6.

Not true, Audi invest a lots of money into research and development I much prefer the new face lift A6 over the 5 Series or Merc, Thats why i bought one, have a great interior finish compared to the other two. sounds like you don't like Audi in general.

If you buy the A6 go for the automatic, I had an A3 Saloon with the 150bhp Engine and never had a problem with it, clocked up nearly a 100.000k. Wouldn't be to worried about the diesel engine dying a death, will be a good while down the road if it does happen. Buying an A6 one to two years old is the way to go, much better value than new, I bought mine a year old with just 7000miles on it, saved nearly €14000 on the price of a new one here with the same spec. Beautiful car to drive and one of the most comfortable cars i have owned, averages around 45mpg

Make sure it's the S Tronic gearbox! I had a 190 hp Auto for a few days and it was a beautiful car to drive!

Really? Put them beside each other in photos and tell us where they are the same. C5 to C7 differences are massive.

Audi invest anywhere from 2.5 to 4.0 billion euro in new product every year and when you take into account the economies of scale it enjoys with VW group it probably directly and indirectly spends more than both competitors. Keep an eye on product offensive thats coming between now and 2022 that is all been paid for currently.

Define class leading? Sales, reviews, handling, awards? I would argue current A3, A4, A7, Q2, TT and R8 would all be class leading but its quite subjective

Audi A6 2012 3.0 TDI automatic from new. 290,000km on it. Never had an engine related issue.

Before that had a 2006 BMW 535D and that started to get expensive to maintain at around 300,000Km and I also had that from new.

So in my experience bottom line is I have no major issues with my A6 and drive it daily.

60k a year! How long is your commute? You'd want to be in a brand new car if you're doing that much driving.

My commute is Dublin to Galway and back, or Dublin to Belfast and back , Waterford , Cork etc. It's rare actually these days that I won't at least do 240Km two or three times a week maybe more.

I know my A6 inside out basically and I can report to you that it has stood by me every morning even if it's -5 and had done 300Km the day before. Couple of lads in work got one since I have and nothing major to report. I would get another one but looking at an A7 next time.

Only thing is actually that quattro would be nice in mine. I got it before it was standard in them and the 3.0 litre can be a bit bouncy taking off on just the two front weels.

I have a 161 Audi A6 from new. At 40,000km, the water pump failed and a fortnight later the gearbox failed.... Audi Ireland response was abysmal!!!

What was their response? Was it not still under warranty? Manual or Auto?
