    Update: Vote now! http://spo.io/2okD14w

Okay, we’re running a bit late this year and we decided to do things a bit differently. Rather than limit the awards to films released in Ireland during the preceding calendar year, we decided to expand it to include films released in the first 3 months of the new year. So all films released in Ireland in the 15 month period between January 2016 and March 2017 are eligible for this year’s awards.

The advantage of doing it this way is that major award contenders/winners from the previous year which only got released in Ireland in the new year and thus wouldn’t have normally been eligible are now eligible. And not only that, but most people will probably have had a chance to see them and nominate/vote for them while they are still fresh in their memories. This is an experiment, but if it works out we may do future awards from the period April to March of the following year.

There’s also a minor change to the Best Film categories this year. Best Non-American English Language Film is no more. That category has been absorbed into the slightly tweaked Best Blockbuster/Hollywood Film (which now covers mid-budget Hollywood films as well as blockbusters of any origin) and Best Indie/Arthouse (which is no longer limited to just American independent cinema but can include films from the UK, Australia, etc).

    Start nominating!

The Misc and Film nomination threads are now up and the Acting and Walk of Shame categories will follow shortly. Nominations will then be counted and everyone will vote.

Reminder that these are up and running in case you missed it over the last few days. Please nominate, otherwise we will be forced to fill the categories with Hungarian arthouse dramas and create an artificial impression of the forum's auterial preferences. You have been sufficiently warned :)

Second and final batch of nomination threads are up now! These are the acting awards and the delightfully mean-spirited walk of shame categories.

    Go, nominate, be happy!

Just to add: there's several categories where there is literally one vote difference in it. Who said your vote can't make a difference?!

Watched Room recently. Probably the most overrated movie since The Revenant. Fair City are running a similar story at the moment, which although shockingly bad, is about as entertaining as Room. Not a good reflection on the forum that it beat Moonlight. A far superior movie, and one of the best of the last decade.

Agree. I thought Room was fùcking shìt; especially disappointing as your man has done some class movies in the past.

Glad to see The Hateful Eight do so well, class out film. That's Tarantino's best since Jackie Browne in my opinion.

I can understand not liking it but Room is not '****ing ****'. Tough subject matter turned into something much more expansive. It was an ambitious project and I'm glad it got the plaudits it did.

I think its quite poorly directed (the over the top melodramatic soundtrack replete with slow motion cuts throughout the film), annoying (kid going on about the objects in the Room), lacks depth, and the movie absolutely fizzles out to nothing in its second half. It's a sunday independant readers opinion of what abuse actually is. Plus its a character study(ies). Those movies live and die on the main performance and I don't think either of the actors are good enough for it to be honest.

For me it felt like I was watching a two hour long Coldplay video.

Surprised you haven't said it's victim porn.

Moonlight was so boring in the first 45 minutes I turned it off. There was nothing it in at all, nothing. A nice arty presentation and shot selection but nothing new, or outstanding dramatically or in the script. In my opinion it won best oscar as a token because it was a black film and we all know what happened last year. So now even though maybe 10% of the films in America are made by black people, they are going to dominate 50% or more of the awards from here on because of social justice.
According to most Moonlight picked up just after I switched it off and became this fantastic movie, so I might have to return to it at some point. But I enjoyed Room from the start, sure a few flaws, but hardly f'ing ****e like the other lad says. Thats just nonsense.
And as far as its reflection on the forum, thats a bizarre statement in my eyes, only because half of it is devoted to superhero crap, which many posters who have huge film knowledge think are just dandy, and would even put the likes of Deadpool up for an oscar nom with  what a 15 minutes scene of people jumping around a junk yard in the sky fighting each other. I mean that kind of stuff lost its shine when I was 16. But that is the reality of movie trends now, so there is no standards to reflect on in the first place!

Sorry but i'm just not having "annoying kid naming things in the room" as a valid criticism. It's just so cynical. The whole point of that first hour or so was to show how the mother had created a whole world for the lad within the room. She's managed to turn a horrific living situation into something special to help them both deal with it.
Also, the two central performances are incredible imo. Jacob Tremblay is astonishing, one of the best acting performances from a child I've ever seen.

Also, I felt the music was really understated. I know movies are subjective but sometimes I think people project problems that aren't there onto certain films.
