Paying for Sky but don't watch it

I pay €98 per month for Sky broadband and TV. €50 for the broadband and the €48 for TV. I don't even know what I get for that €48! No sport, movies or documentaries (Discovery etc), so probably one of the entry packages + HD.

I've noticed that almost all of my viewing is:

    The Irish channels
    The BBC channels
    The Channel 4 channels - Channel 4, More 4, Film 4.
    Dave

As all of these are free to air (aren't they?) I'm basically paying for the Sky interface and the Sky+ features. These are very good though.

What's the best way to get these channels and features as close to Sky+ as possible, especailly series link? I have a home cinema amplifier and surround sound so would like a single box with HDMI out to the amp.

    Cheers for any adivce.

If your TV has Saorview then Buy a Freesat HDD box. http://www.freesat.co.uk/get-freesat/all-boxes

Dave is not Free To Air

... and cancel your Sky subscription.

freesat for the uk stations. pause/rewind/record are fairly standard but keep an eye out for series link.

saorview for the irish stations. Your tv probably has it built in. You need an aerial.

or you could get a combi box (something like this) and keep all your stations in one place.

How easy is that to use/maintain vs say an official Freesat box though, and does it contain the same functionality and convenience of the Sky+/Freesat box?

I don't mind getting my hands dirty occasionally from a technical standpoint (as I work in IT anyway) but I also prefer things to "just work" for the most part too :)
