Calor Gas (http://www.calorgas.ie/) running a deal to switch during the month of March and receive a free Boiler & €250 Credit.

Has anybody any experience with this deal or Calor in general. Are the boilers on offer any use?

We need a new boiler so this seems hard to pass up.

T&C state we have to pay for installation which I am currently pricing and no mention of being locked into a contract so all in all seems a good deal.

    Any thoughts?

Do you need to get the tank or do they do connections to the main grid ?

    T&C's are all about LPG

We availed of this offer last year and it has been fine, no issue with the boiler, better than what we had before (10+ year old gas boiler so this one is more efficient). We are locked into a contract for 2 years but their rate is so much better than what we were on that we had no issues signing.

What portion of the install cost do you need to pay?
How much on average is heating cost a week\month?

It may not be obvious to people, but Calor gas (lpg) and mains gas (Natural gas) are not the same. LPG is approx twice the price per KwH and you are almost locked into suppliers as nobody else sells it except FloGas.

Unless Calor have started selling natural gas of course...

Thought they were doing both like flogas. When we bought our first house I looked at LPG but once you took the tank on rental from calor or flogas then you had to bend over and get shafted. Not sure if the regulators have opened the market. LPG was about 30% cheaper if you had your own tank. Knew people in sligo/ cavan that bought the tank + installation from over the border for about £600 then you could shop around for the gas, tank paid for itself in a couple of fills. Think tervas in cork will sell a tank outright too.

Clicking through to the offer it says:
If your home is located off the natural gas grid and meets the requirements for a Calor bulk tank supply of LPG, one of our home energy representatives would be delighted to visit your home to conduct a Free Home Heating Assessment.

So it's for LPG and not natural gas. Looking at their prices and doing quick and dirty maths, it works out ~10-13c per KwH. Flogas are doing Natural Gas at 5.5c per KwH.

How does this compare to oil per kwh? Thinking of changing from oil.

    What about their existing customers?
Our estate has its own supply but we all have to be with Calor. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say they don't give a **** about existing customers

The only thing more expensive per KWh is electricity.

Kerosene works out ~7.5c per KWh.

I'll stick with the oil then so. Thanks.

Big tank LPG is far too expensive, Calor are tying to sell the "lifestyle".

The SEAI do a great publication of the delevered energy cost per €: http://www.seai.ie/Publications/Statistics_Publications/Fuel_Cost_Comparison/Domestic-Fuel-Cost-Comparisons.pdf

While the cost of the fuel will vary, it does give the calculations.

According to that spreadhseet, bulk LPG @ 64c/litre is 9.07c/kw and Oil is 6.23c/kw @ €630/1000L (but its about 580-600 now). Thats a massive ~40% difference

You would wonder why bulk LPG is so expensive @ 64c/litre, LPG for cars with road duty included is the same price!!
