And who influenced society back then?

And by influenced I mean controlled.

I couldn't agree more that there is a thread on this already.

I doubt there is much that could convince someone like you to change, or even question your views.

And by controlled you mean beat it with a stick into submission.

Very true CL, though I would also hold the view that while the Catholic church was in quite the few arenas a very negative influence, we do have a tendency to look back and pin all our previous woes(and some current) on the boogeyman that the church has become. It's more comforting in a way. Like those who blame their parents all their lives for who they are. They were the major influence yes, but one of many and the "ordinary people of Ireland", our grandparents and great grandparents were the ones enforcing that influence for good and ill.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

So the good archbishop now feels that the church was only a follower of societal trends, a victim even, and not the institution that declared itself to be the sole moral arbiter of society's conscience.

You have to admire the brass neck of them.

Out of interest, what exactly is the church's role in society, if their professionals have no deeper understanding of right and wrong than a criminal?

People were terrified to stand up to the church; In no means does this condone what occured during these times it does allow us to reflect and see how much better we are that people are turning from the church and how they won't be able to act with so much power and leverage over people. My own parents and I can assume a vast amount of peoples parents/grandparents were scared to speak up. People in power that stood up to them were destroyed and seen as social pariahs. We have many reported cases of people inside the church who tried to help those being abused but were sent away to missions/the back arse of nowhere so the abuse could continue. The church is completely responsible and for the Arch Bishop to say anything else is a disgrace. In the case of Tuam the women/mothers/Irish citizens that died here were sent by their families out of shame, shame brought on by the church's own "moral highground". The Church has a debt to repay Ireland, and especially the people who died in these "homes".
