Any opinions on Lindos in Rhodes?

I've never been to Greece, I really want to go.

My searches (flights, accommodation, reviews etc) are leading me to think about self catering in Lindos, Rhodes. We'd be travelling in late September.

    We'll be hiring a car - lying on a beach won't be a priority.

I'm attracted to the idea of a traditional white Greek village, with bars and restaurants within an easy walk in the evenings. Having to take taxi's annoys me.

We're not party animals, but will want a decent meal (I'll eat anything, him not so much) and few glasses of wine while people watching.

I know from reviews that the town attracts a lot of coach tours by day - is there any chance it would be too quiet at night?

Does anyone who has been have any opinions/tips/warnings?

    Thanks :)

I have an aunt who goes to Lindos every year and loves it. Very genuine Greek old style with donkeys, whitewashed walls etc. Looks beautiful. A lot of steps which can be difficult during summer months as the heat is unreal.

Quite expensive and they live in the UK so should be getting better value than the euro. They just stay in a guesthouse and think it's 75 pounds a night for just a bed. They still go back every year though so must have something going for it.

We stayed there about five years ago and really liked it. It's very low-rise, lovely whitewashed buildings and two beautiful beaches. It attracts a LOT of tourists - especially from the UK and from Germany. There are also quite a few daytrippers from cruise ships.

Restaurants are excellent - most have roof-top terraces so you can watch the sun go down as you eat. However, it is pricey - we paid much the same as what you'd pay in Dublin for our meals.

Most of the tourists tend to be either families or older couples. For this reason, I suppose, there isn't a lot to do in the evenings after your meal. There are very few bars that open late, and we didn't find them all that great.

Having said all that if you're looking for a relaxing, laid-back holiday it's a lovely spot. I'd recommend staying a couple of nights in Rhodes town too - it is spectacular, especially in the evenings when the daytrippers are gone.

Thanks guys, interesting you both said it's expensive. Food for thought.

In general, food and drink on Greek Islands and Cyprus would be closer in cost to what you would pay in Ireland than say Spanish resorts. It's just a dearer place to visit - but still well worth it. Lindos is lovely but if you have a car you might prefer to stay somewhere else on the island and just visit by car. Rhodes town is also very nice.

Not true, i've been to Zante many times, recently went to Crete, and you can get a 3 course meal for 2, including a bottle of wine for less than 50euro, and great food it is so

We're heading to Rhodes in Sept, staying in Lardos, which is very quiet but close to Lindos, will be popping there for a gander alright

Bumping this to give my review:

I loved Lindos. I loved everything about it. The low rise whitewashed buildings, narrow streets, rooftop restaurants, relaxing bars (there were plenty loud and not relaxing open til 5am, plenty to suit every taste), the food, the friendly people...

Food - we ate in a different a restaurant every night, plenty to choose from, and, even at the end of the season, there was loads going on.

Price wise I'd say the usual international type food was slightly cheaper than here, but the traditional Greek dishes were all around the €9-14 mark, and the portions very big. Fish was very reasonable as long as you weren't eating prawns or lobster. We usually shared one starter - that in fact seemed to be the norm. Beer (€3.50-5.00 for a half litre) and wine (house wine €5.00-9.00 for a half litre carafe).

Town was very busy with coach tours in the mornings, (too many people and donkeys competing for space in very narrow streets) but by lunchtime it was very pleasant. Loads of different other tourists about: UK, Germany, France, Scandinavia, Italy, Eastern Europe, US.

3 beaches in the town, plenty of touristy shops - there's something for everyone there.

Negatives: Greek plumbing, mad drivers, street and road signs like Ireland in the 70's (non existent or contradictory), coming home.
