I've recently quit the Sky contract and my Irish LG tv has built in tuners so I can watch Soarview and Freesat on my TV but I want to be able to record some programmes. (It is a faff to switch between them)

I've got an old Sony DVD player with HDD that I bought in the U.K. a few years ago. However, I'm guessing that this won't be able to receive the satellite broadcast directly?

Do I have to buy a new HDD recorder from an Irish store or can I buy one from Amazon? Or should I buy a basic tuner device to connect to my old HDD recorder?

I'm really not sure of the options available.

It is likely a USB stick in to the USB port tv will record directly without the need for anything else. If you have the manual of the tv it should be detailed there, also the LG website will have the manual.

Adding a basic sat box is an option but not very flexible, it'll require setting timers on both, assuming there is a timer option on the sat box.

Have you considered a Freesat twin tuner recorder?

When I tried to record on a Sony tv a 64 gb usb stick was the minimum requirement. With some sets you can't switch channels when recording, so a separate tuner or a combo could be your only option.

Fire the model no into google and find a manual.

If the Sony doesn't have HDMI IN and then at best you'll only able to record SCART, and there's a good chance your TV don't send anything out.

Sony is the company that used to sell DVD camcorders. You could record video direct to those little DVD disks but to take photos you had to use a memory stick

Pretty much every TV allows USB recording these days. Playback on a different device may not be so easy, especially if recording HD eg Freesat boxes encrypt HD.

What is your LG TV model?

There's an easy way to switch between Saorview and Freesat channels

Really? My LG tv is a 49UF675V
The only way I can switch between satellite and tuner is via the Guide - Red button - select tuner or satellite -OK - back to Guide.

If I use a USB stick to record, I won't be able to watch anything else, will I?

I've got a Tv stick for watching Netflix etc.

Go to RTE One and while watching it. Press Home and across to My Programmes and click on Add channel

Then go your UK channels and again go to BBC One and press home, my programmes and add BBC One

Then you can easily switch between the services by pressing the home button

You might not be able to watch 1 channel while another is recording as I think that TV doesn't have a twin tuner
