Hi, Im going to be starting an evening course in September which requires me to do 800 hours unpaid work placement. I was just wondering if I could keep my claim with social welfare as I'll have literally no income without it. The course is 2 nights a week.

    Thanks in advance.

fairly sure if you start a course you have to switch over to back to education allowance aswel so I'd look into that...also when you're on btea any unpaid placement essential for the course wont affect your payment!

As far as I know, a standard Evening Course without Work Experience wouldn't affect your Jobseeker's Payment, as it largely wouldn't affect your ability to take up Fulltime work if offered it. If the job happened to include evening work, you would be expected to go to work over attending your Course.

Back to Education is for Students attending their Course on a Full-time basis, and therefore they wouldn't be viewed as being Jobseekers as they wouldn't be able to take up a Fulltime job during term-time if offered it. There are Part-time options too, for doing a Part-time Course, and I think, the view that's taken is that, you're still supposed to be looking for a Fulltime job, and expected to leave the Course if offered work.

What Course are you doing may I ask? Like if there's x amount of hours that you have to do as work experience, would it not be classed as a Fulltime Course? Would there be any possibility of doing it as Volunteering depending on the Organization/Company, - where you would retain your Jobseeker's payment......

The course is a higher diploma in professional social care, and the work placement requires 800 hours. The course is not classified as full time, and the placement hours will be up to the organisation so if I was doing, say, 3 days per week unpaid placement, im wondering if I'd be able to sign on for the other days or does that differ when the 'job' is unpaid?
I also saw something regarding welfare called the part time education option which has a section on the form asking about work placement on a part time course, so I'm wondering how that works also.. It's proving difficult to find some extra information on these options.

Could you possibly rephrase the last section about doing it on a voluntary basis? I've never been on Jobseeker's before as I've been working and in full time education so I'm not sure of the ins and outs

    Thanks for reply!
