I've passed my test today. When I go to my NDLS appointment next week to apply for my full licence, will they take my permit from me there and then?

    First off congratulations!

Go to your NDLS appointment and apply for your full licence, it will come in the post after a few days and that letter gives a PO box address to return your old learner permit to.

I don't think your under an obligation to as I've never heard of them being followed up on but they do ask you to post them down.

So no, you retain your learner permit and receipt of application as proof of your full license.

The day I passed I went straight in to the ndls too and my learner permit was taken off me along with my certificate of competency. I just took a photo of them with my phone just in case but the new license came out to meveryone in 3 days anyway.

This once was the case but now...

    This is the case.

That's assuming the permit will still be in-date on the day you go to the NDLS centre.

    Congrats :)

My learner permit wasn't taken off me when I applied for my full licence a few weeks ago. I think the letter just said to destroy my old licence, but I may be wrong. Either way you don't hand in your learner's permit at the NDLS centre.

If you passed the test, for example, in March, but didn't apply for full licence until say June, what date would appear on the licence...March or June?
Just thinking here where there are a few categories on LP, it would be handy to pass the few categories and then renew the full licence just once

Thank you! My permit is valid until September 2018 but it seems a little pointless to have it now I don't need it!

Still, could use it as an ID if I ever need to - I'm 25 but i look about 16.

June in this example. The category start date is the day you apply to the NDLS regardless of when you pass the test :)

True but bear in mind that cat B is a prerequisite for cats BE, C (and CE) as well as D (and DE). If you already had a full B and wanted to pick up the higher categories, you could apply for a permit in BE, A, C & D and pass all those tests over on the same learner permit and add them all at once - they would all have the same category start date :)
