20cm of snow on most of the higher Dublin / Wicklow mountains from Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, I can't make it out this weekend.

Anyone going for a winter's hike? Normal boots, or would you bring some sort of snow shoes / crampons?

Hmmm, Mourne mountains beckon again.......whats the prediction there?

Ive a pair of B2 soled Scarpa boots ill be wearing. I still havent got crampons.

I was up lug 3 weekends (I think) ago and there was 15/20cm or in places. I dont think crampons are necessary unless you want to go up gullies or theres a period of weather like 2009 or 2010 and a decent build up with ice. Open to correction though. No expert on winter climbing/hiking.

I wear wellington style boots with proper soles (Either Finnish Nokia boots or Norwegian Viking shin high ones). Snow in Ireland tends to be so very wet, nothing worse than wet cold feet.

I usually find gators more than enough to keep the wet out. Wellies sound awful for hiking in

Spend any time in northern latitudes and you'll come to view boots in a whole new light. My nokias can even have spikes inserted into the soles for extra grip.

If the snow comes then take care even heading down that neck of the woods. One Sunday February last year we went down on what was a cold if dry day in Dublin only to be forced to turn back at a totally iced up Roundwood. And it wasn't even a heavy snow day when we were there. Hopefully it won't be that bad for you...

Temperatures aren't forecast to go below zero anywhere where there are roads, so should be ok, but obviously forecasts are only forecasts...

Did anyone get up to wicklow? Was going to do lug and then figured the snow line would be too high to get to go up any gullies etc. Was I wrong...?

There was plenty of snow right on the high peaks when I was hiking glendalough upper lake spinc route, but sadly it turned into sleet before I could make a snowman!
