Anyone planning on taking part in this years ZeroDays CTF?

It looks like they plan to have 50 teams taking part this year.. the last few events have been excellent.. tickets go on sale in next day or so.

Hey is this only open to Colleges? Seems college focused but doesn't actually say professionals can't enter?

Its open to professionals too. Ive entered it every year so far. There are 2 categories, student and non-student, although the students win better prizes. The team who won last years pro category were made up from your former employer.

Yea The event is open to everyone and like denartha mentioned it has two sections.. its basically like a varsities event for college teams but also open to others. Last year had 40 teams about 28 college teams and 12 teams from industry. There is a good mix of challenges suitable for all levels. Essentially anyone with any interest in IT will be able to take part, we encourage new teams so there are plenty of easy levels to ease people in.. but also plenty of harder levels for the serious players.

There is also a great after party and live entertainment etc...

I'm also one of the organisers for the event so I'm obviously biased :)

What kinds of challenges are presented to the teams may I ask? Is it a case of having the day to get through a series of challenges or is that more war-games?

I ask as I've no idea what's involved so excuse my ignorance

Yeah its a series of challenges with points awarded every time you solve one. At least thats how it was last year.

We usually have about 50 stand alone challenges, across several domains. Each domain has 5 questions of increasing difficulty. The domains usually include Crypto, forensics, Recon, Programming, Trivia, Exploit, Web apps, Reversing, Pot Luck, Physical. (I'm still writing the challenges for this year)

Challenges like exploit and web apps involve attacking live severs, while physical challenges include stuff like hardware hacking and lock picking.. so its pretty varied. The easy challenges in each domain can be solved by anyone who has a year or two of IT experience, while the harder challenges can be very challenging for even the most experienced professionals.

The number of challenges means that all teams of all abilities are kept busy for the day and to win a team needs 4 strong members and can't rely on just one strong member, as there is just too much to do.
