Heathrow Spotting Tips Please

    Hi,
I'm bringing my 10-year-old to London for a soccer match in mid-March, and planning to spend a few hours spotting around Heathrow before flying back from Heathrow on Sunday evening.

spotterguide.net seem to have a pretty comprehensive guide, so I plan to use that, but just wondering if anybody has any particular tips from their own experience.

We should have four or five hours to play around with so we can try a few different areas. We might start with Hatton's Cross station and Myrtle Ave, and then maybe head over to Terminal 5.

One thing that just doesn't seem to be available is a location where you can get a good close-up of planes lining up for take-off, so if anyone can contradict me on that one, that would be great. Bearing in mind that my boy is 4 feet something and we won't have a step-ladder ;-) ...

    Thanks!
    /M.

In T2 there is a good view of arrivals from the east (i.e the 27's are active) from Weatherspoon's pub. If you're looking for a bite to eat before departure it's not bad.

There aren't any decent spots for line-up views that I can think of, hence all photos that you will find on-line of LHR traffic are of aircraft in the air, either taking off or landing.

I parked up at this spot on the way back to the car hire once - great spot, I doubt you could stay there for a long time though!

Heathrow put up a metal sheet at eye level on the fence around the airport so that's why there aren't many photos through the fence.

Also they have loads of building in the way.

I'd head to Hatton cross you should get some good shots if they are landing from the east.

There is always a runway change at 3pm. This week Mon-Sun it is 27L (Hatton Cross) for landing up until 3pm. From 3pm to close it is 27R. Next week there will be a changeover, 27R for landing until 3pm and 27L from 3pm.
Of course the wind could change and come from the East. In this case, all day, landing on 09L and take off 09R with the exception of some aircraft landing on 09R.

The A380 still has the 6nm spacing between it and any aircraft behind it. If ATC cannot maintain this gap the A380 will be land on the take off runway. Impossible to predict this eventuality.

Hope this is of some help.
