Prostaglandin to heifer

How late in pregnancy can you give prostaglandin to a heifer? I've a purebred limousine heifer here, 19 months old. I'm almost certain I saw her bulling before the winter, but haven't seen her since. I'd be worried if I gave it to her this late in pregnancy, I might do damage to her.

What would you be thinking about that for. Sure won't she be fine? Vet has to prescribe it anyway so chat him.

She's still small enough and in calf to a runt.

I think you're panicing. She couldn't be that small at 19mths. What weight is she?

Ah maybe 475kgs. She was weaned at 3 months and so she got a bit stunted. Had to cull her mother before she killed someone.

Are you sure she's in calf? Some heifers here that were mad bulling last autumn in the field aren't showing any signs when they're on the slats.
What do you mean by "before the winter"?
Isn't there some risks with giving estrumate after four months in calf.

I think I saw her bulling in the field with weanlings younger than her. One was a bull maybe 8 months or so. I suppose better to let her go full term now.

    Get her scanned first patsy.

Have yearling heifer here that ended up being with a weakling bull and may be in calf. Want to sell her and to avoid any future hassle I was going to give her a shot of estimate. How long should I wait from the animals were separated before I inject her,and is there any need to wait a further month and scan her, a kind of to be sure to find be sure.

How long ago would she have been served?

You only need to wait 10 days to inject her after separating them. I've never heard of a shot of Estrumate not working.

It wont work if they are over a certain stage in calf, I found out, had to get a different injection, which took 2 shots of to do the job. Messy job

The surest way is to wait 30 to 35 days and get her scanned. I'm not a fan of an injection as first action.

    Pregnancies From Mismating

Unwanted pregnancies can be safely and efficiently terminated from 1 week after mating until about 5 months of gestation. The induced abortion is normally uncomplicated and the fetus and placenta are usually expelled about 4 to 5 days after the injection with the reproductive tract returning to normal soon after the abortion. The ability of Estrumate to induce abortion decreases beyond the fifth month of gestation while the risk of dystocia and its consequences increases.

The quote above is from the web. The package insert states: For the termination of pregnancy, best results are obtained before day 100 of gestation. Results are less reliable between day 100 and 150 of gestation.

IIRC, older data sheets had that limit at 120 days.

I've known Estrumate to work beyond the five months but occasionally with consequences.... neither an easy abortion or an early calving... cervix not opening fully, like a ringed ewe... horrible result.

The aim of argument, or of discussion, should not be victory, but progress. Joseph Joubert

The ultimate purpose of debate is not to produce consensus. It's to promote critical thinking.

They running together about about a month. Got mixed in shed and never copped. Just don't want hassle and expense of someone ending up with an animal they didn't want in-calf.
    Scanning probably best option.

    He was a weanling, not a weakling.😀
