It is not too difficult.Advise Occ Health of your wishes with a support letter from your GP or consultant outlining your health issues. They need to make an appointment for you to see Occ Health Doctor,
Send a letter to your line manager/HRsalaries Department and Occ Health Doctor saying that you wish to be considered for retirement on Health grounds.
HRwill send you a form to complete and a form to be completed by your GP or consultant.
When you visit your Occ Health Doctor he will sign you as fit to retire but get your GP or consultant to send him back the signed form asap. The whole process takes about 3 months. You may need to take out a Loan
    pending monies coming through.(I did)
Whole process takes about 3 months.Best of luck and if you have any further questions I would be glad to help

    You Public or private sector?

Without giving away too much detail let us know what sector you work in.

Yes, wondering if u are Public or private sector.I only had 2 years to go but know people who had up to the 6 which is max they give anyway in public sector.Who is refusing you? And why?.You need to put this in writing requesting the reason why they are refusing You retirement on health grounds.Send by registeredi
post and copy before sending or just get proof of posting from post office.Thisis a free service but proof that you wrote to them.
Keep details of all appointments but you need to have in writing the reason from then when recommended by your GP and consultant.Hope this helps.Record dates and times of any contacts from now.Think you're been treated unfairly.

Speaking from Public Sector experience if an OH doctor won't sign you off as a candidate for retirement on the grounds of ill health it's because they consider that you are fit for work. What you think doesn't usually come into it.

I once sent someone for assessment who had been off sick for over 4 years (stress) and the doctor declined to approve their retirement on ill health grounds.

Ask to see the OH doctors report upon which the refusal was based. This will give you the reasons why you were not deemed a suitable candidate.

The thread this was split out from said it was HSE. For most private sector roles, there won't be any difference between retiring and just resigning. It's just some public sector ones that have factors which make retirement more attractive (but thus harder to get).

OP - are your union helping here? They should be.

It's quite difficult to get Ill Health Retirement in the Civil Service due to the cost associated with it. It doesn't even matter what an individual's Doctor or Consultant says, the only opinion that matters* is that of the CMO.

*apart from the relevant HR Manager of any Department who has the final say. The CMO gives a medical opinion, the HR manager makes the decision.

My own experience is in one specific area of the public service where the process is based around medical advice and final gov. departmental sign off (usually straightforward enough).

It's important to note that the medical evidence supplied by your own GP/Specialist IS important.
I met the CMO and the medical evidence I supplied was hugely significant. I did not expect a decision on the day of my appointment but the CMO told me at end of meeting that they would be approving retirement on ill health grounds.
I have since learned that this is in fact the case and it is with the SG for signing off.

I guess they got sorted a year ago
