Scirocco 161 shaking when accelerating

    Hey guys,

Having an issue where when I want to suddenly accelerate and put my foot down the pedal all the way the car starts to shake until it speeds up. Like for instance if I am going at 100km on 6th gear at 1000 rpm and want to go to 120km when I push my foot down the pedal fully the car will start to shake and once it reaches 120km and around 1600 rpm it stops shaking even if my foot is still on the pedal fully down. It is the same for lower speeds where if I am going at 40km and suddenly accelerate it will shake until the rpm goes past 1600.
I have it under warranty so will bring up to the dealer in the next week or so to have a look but just wanted to ask if anyone has an idea on what could be the issue as it is annoying me to bits.

    Petrol or diesel?
Is it the steering wheel which is shaking or the engine?

    Diesel,
The whole front of the car shakes

Not DIY effort, moved to main forum.

I've seen 1.6 passats shiver alot at low end.
Is it possible to do away with this by changing driving style - for example if you were to accelerate away from 100 kmh in 5th gear instead of 6th, would it be fine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,516 ✭✭✭XsApollo

How long have you had the car?
Did you just discover this because you started accelerating with your foot to the floor or was it fine when you did this before.

1000rpm in a diesel with the foot down usually won't result in anything happening except a bit of noise and vibration :-P

It sounds like a flywheel issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭pa990

Will the same thing happen at 100kph in 5th gear ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

It won't be at 1k rpm in 6th at 100kph, so if you are measuring it by the rev counter it's going to struggle to pull from close on idle speed in top gear. It will do it but won't be all that happy about it until the turbo spools.

Sounds like you're driving in too high a gear, try dropping a gear and not flooring it under 2k rpm.

Is this a new thing or always there?
If new... have you had the emissions fix recall done...

You say you put your foot down full?

For me to go from 100 to 120 I only need about 1 inch of pedal travel on any car I've had.

In a high gear also on any car nothing really happens when you floor it because your asking for max air and fuel that the car engine can't respond and may struggle until rpm increases.

Still under warranty.. just drop it into vw

    I drove a 140hp a4 with a similar 2.0 engine. I'm sure they're very economical with their gearing but

Sorry, I dozed off there thinking about the acceleration from 4th gear on.

    Car is laboring.

    Drop a gear.

1000rpm is too low to be accelerating in 6th..

Shaking is only the start of your problems. Dual Mass Flywheel

    A 161 wouldn't require the retro fix.

Sounds like this is what's happening.

Same in the 2.0d Golf's, @100kmh it's doing around 11-1200rpm, basically idling and really needs to drop back to 5th to accelerate briskly.

And nothing will kill a dmf faster than driving the car like this, may be already goosed!

    Hey guys,

...going at 100km on 6th gear at 1000 rpm...
    - seriously doubt this... 2.0l TDI? My Octavia vRS TDI (2.0l EA288) spins 1500 RPM in 6th at 100kmh - HUGE difference in torque & tractability under acceleration and I'd imagine a 1.6 might spin even more...

If you truly are only doing 1000 RPM in 6th whatever your speed, you're approaching engine stall territory - change down to 5th or better 4th to accelerate safely. However if you truly are only doing 1000 RPM, in 6th, at 100kmh, I suspect something else amiss - clutch, DMF, etc. Others may have differing views.

So was driving the car yesterday and after reading this thread it's pretty much the case of me trying to accelerate too quick while under a low rpm, was looking at the YouTube video on lugging that was posted and never knew about it until now so cheers for that.
There wasnt any shaking when I downshifted and accelerated when I tested it yesterday on the motorway and from driving it normally.
It's my second day of having this car so still getting used to it and was driving a 1.4 before so wasn't used to the 6 gears and increased engine size.
Thanks lads for all the posts as I would've messed my dmf up sonner rather than later.

Just to update this thread, the shaking was starting to get worse again the last few weeks whenever I'd shift to third or fourth and try to build some speed. So I decided to drop it into VW to have a look and they were very helpful. They said it was a flywheel issue causing the shakes and it will be replaced under warranty so happy out with that and hopefully that should fix the problems.

What's the issue with the flywheel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Defective part I'd imagine, it would hardly be worn naturally on a 1 year old car.

Check out the reviews on the Scirocco on www.honestjohn.co.uk especially the good and bad ..

As mentioned earlier in this post laboring (changing up too early or down too late) is the death of dual mass flywheels. Unless you change your driving style it will go again and again and again.. If you cannot do that then buy an auto..

I really don't understand how a basic understanding of at least the theory of how the drive train works didn't become part of driver training years ago..

No one with a drivers license should have to have laboring and appropriate engine revs explained to them on an internet forum.

Based on his (or her) initial post I am amazed it lasted a year..

I bought the car a few months back when it only had 3500km and noticed some shaking while I was on the motorway to Holyhead so the problem was there already as an FYI, Strange that it was worn considering it's a year old but I'm glad they spotted something anyway

previous owner could have been lugging the engine for 3500km

What I was thinking aswell. It was a demo car too. I noticed the gear change notificitaion is a tad bit on the early side while revs are still lowish to change so I've been sticking to 2k and then change to be on the safe side. Getting something in the fuel pump changed as there was a buzzing noise too which they said is a little too loud.
When I pop the car back to them I'll ask them for a more detailed report.

    Ohh sweet jebus.

No offense but you should be driving an auto..

You shouldn't need an indicator on he dash or a rev counter to tell you when to change gear. if you are looking at the rev counter you are not looking at the road..

ah here give over. They obviously just mean they noticed the indicator coming on too early and they are ignoring it and changing when they feel is right.

I have read the thread, OP is new to having a long 6th gear, and has actually discovered that there is another issue with the car.

Just silly saying they're not looking at the road just by them making note of the revs and gear change indicator. I bet they weren't looking at the road when checking what speed they were doing too
