If after having work done by a mechanic you think the price is way off, is there anything realistically you can do?

Not really...could try contest it and offer to take your business elsewhere in future - it's good to be sure though so have the work double checked by another mechanic.

Go back in time and get them to give you a price before carrying out the work?

What did you get done, in what type of garage, what kind of car is it, what year and how much did you pay? Can't really answer that until the above are provided.

Did you ask for a quote before doing any work? Did he give you an itemised bill showing what was done parts and labour?

Ha yeh...bit of a foolish oversight on my part alright. I'm absolutely sick tbh but if there's nothing that can be done about it I'm gonna have to suck it up and give myself a stern talking to...ugh

It might have needed a lot of labour or parts to be fair.

You'd want to be getting it in writing. Years ago I took a 4x4 to a garage with a list of what I wanted done and they did a lot of extra work that didn't need doing even though o rang them every day to see how it was progressing.

Oil and coolant only was his only expense...I provided head gasket and I got the head skimmed. The work isn't the issue...the issue is if you're overcharged for labour there's f*ck all you can do about it.

What about the Rates, waste, electricity etc? What was the labour?

Labour was €50 an hour which is not in dispute - my question is if there is a dispute, is there anything the customer can do or is there anyone that can arbitrate over matters like this like the small claims court or whoever.

You really need to stop beating around the bush and provide the specific details.....

€50 an hour is a good rate but it depends on how many hours they say the job took. If it's an excessive amount then you can complain and see what they say but other than that there is nothing you can do about it other than not pay the bill or only pay what you think the work was worth.

What exactly did you have done?

It wasn't a car...it was a bike...what was done is besides the point...I'm not asking for people to adjudicate on whether a charge is excessive...I was asking what can be done if you have a grievance with a bill...they have your keys and vehicle. It would be hard to be getting either back without paying the bill in full I'd imagine.

Not being smart with you buddy but it's very hard for people to give advice without all the facts. It's like saying I ate in a restaurant and was charged a hundred euro, was I overcharged? Without knowing what you ate or whether it was a chipper or a Michelin star place, how can anybody answer and give you the right advice?

    Ask for an itemised list.

Yes, I will, but even then - if I have a problem with a few items and I voice my concerns, where can it realistically go from there? The mechanic puts forward his argument about whatever, I disagree, and then we're at a stalemate where he has my keys and vehicle. What then?

Honestly I would move on. When I am calling about a service, I always and always ask for a price. 95% of the issues around price on boards generally revolve around I never asked for a price and I was shocked about how expensive it was

Pay them, contact your solicitor and take them to court. 50 euro and hour sounds reasonable, you not providing any more details about your grievance isn't reasonable.

Get an estimate of how long job will take beforehand

As itll give you a guideline....but be aware some jobs can turn into cùnts with seized parts/shearing bolts etc and any mechanic/garage wortg there weight will price them in beforehand??
