Very expensive quote for Yaris repairs

    Hi there,

So I dropped in my '03 Yaris D4d 1.4 Diesel into a Toyota Dealer for once for it's annual service and got back a pretty shocking bill of close to €1,600 for various repairs...seemed a bit ott to me so thought I'd check with people here.

There were various small fixes and 2 tyres at €70 each, but the main costs were as follows

€250 for a possible warped disk (to be replaced with pads apparently, even though they say pads are ok)
€387 for wheel bearings (they say are noisy but I've never noticed any sound from them)
€361 for 4 brake flexi hoses (cracking)
€156 front arb washers, nuts & bushes x8
€170 front washer jet motor pump

Does this seem excessive? It doesnt even include the cost of the service in the first place. Cheers for any advice

Bringing a 14 year old car to a main dealer rarely makes sense from a % of vehicle value point of view.
Now with a main dealer you will be getting Toyota genuine parts, and an inherent guarantee that the work will be done to spec - but you need to keep in mind that there are independent garages who can do the work much cheaper due to the fact that they have the freedom to use OE or OE equivalent parts that aren't Toyota branded. They also don't have the overheads and specialist equipment associated with the glass palaces that main dealers need to have to keep the Toyota franchise.

I would get a second opinion from an independent garage. As the car is worth so little and is realistically nearing end of life, there's no point in pumping money into it. Your repairs are essential to the cars safety though so they must be done.

Just to give some comparison, here are prices from micksgarage.ie for non Toyota parts.
    Front discs €63 (Japanparts)
Front pads €12 (Fremax) €24 (Ferrodo)
    Front hoses €28 (Japan parts)

The ARB parts would be roughly €20.
Get your washer pump in a scrapyard, they're common to many Toyotas, I paid €20 for the last one.

Re the wheel bearings, the front ones would be €20 each, the rear ones (which are a substantial part in comparison would be €100 each. It's doubtful that you would need all 4 done.

Obviously you have labour on top of this, but I would guess you would get everything on the list including fitting for well under a grand, and that's including stuff that may not even need doing.

If they've already done the work, then there's not much you can do.

I could see why they'd want to replace the pads if the disk is warped, the pads would have an odd wear pattern from the warped disk. But as far as I can remember new disks are €20-30 each and around the same for pads. Of course prices vary have a look online to get some idea of prices.

Did you authorise the work to be done? If you didn't authorise it then don't pay it. Any garage that performs €1600 worth of work on a 14yr old car without calling the owner first is dodgy.

Would agree with that, vw bora failed nct last year with worn discs, got front set of mintex discs and pads for €80 and a friend fitted them.

I'd be shocked if they had all those parts in stock. Especially as it's a D-4D

Old stock parts and nicely unloaded them.

The lube is covered in the main service price.

Unlikely enough. Maybe things have changed, but back when I was working in a Toyota dealers they'd rarely stick stuff like this. Yes there'd be the inexplicable Dyna mirror and dented Starlet roof skin hiding in the corner, but they wouldn't usually stock most of the brakes stuff listed here as the old model diesel Yaris was such a rarity in the first and if I remember right they had bigger brakes than the 1.0

Thanks for responses. I've not authorised the work, just wanted to get a Toyota service for once. Will bring her to the local garage for a quote.

Would they sort comparable prices for parts as micksgarage or would I save even more buying the parts myself?

She is 14 yrs old but she's a diesel with a good bit of mileage left in her, and better mpg than a prius, so worth spending a few quid on her I reckon

Insurers getting all funny about insuring older cars. It will only get worse.

Jesus that's insane I got 4 Brembo discs and pads to match for 360 quid for a Lexus! Toyota were 180 per disc, where you based op get a good indy mechanic.

Washer jet are about 20 new from a motor factors...

Bring it to a good independent mechanic and save a few €'s.

The rear wheel bearings(if they are on the way out) will be expensive because they are part of the hub and must be purchased as one.

Hi op cheap fix for washer motor is swap rear to front they swap over. You don't need the rear but obviously for nct and road use you do need the front.

I found yaris share some parts with renault also as found rear brake set up branded Renault on a original 2002 yaris years back.

Yaris is an all in one motor front and rear.

    I've seen separate in 02 and 04.

Quite possible few different type fitted.

The production of the yaris moved to france in 2001 and there is a few differences between them and the jap models. Im not sure if there is a difference in the washer motors or not though

did it fail the NCT on any of that list? I'd be inclined to just do the work needed to get it NCTd unless it's an obvious safety issue likes tyres etc.
