Trade union - entitlement to money back?

My dad asked me to investigate the following for him, hopefully someone can be of help?

My dad was a member of a trade union until 1981, called AUEW (Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers). He paid his membership to the union during his time there and moved on after. He has recently been told however that he may now be entitled to money back for his contribution.

Anyone know if this is correct?

I don't see how or why he would be entitled to have his membership dues reimbursed? On what grounds does he think he is entitled to them back?

Does he mean that he believes he is entitled to retirement benefits from his time there or something?

You can claim tax back on union subs via revenue.ie but they only go back 4years I don't know if you can go back that far ring them and ask.

Was there some kind of union pension scheme or something?

He really needs to have some clues as to why he might get money back for you to investigate this
