Irish rail fine appeal

Hi I was fined by the revenue officer two weeks ago on the Dublin to Galway train. I have appealed my fine as I had a valid ticket on my person but mistakenly presented an old invalid ticket to the officer. I subsequently found the valid ticket and showed it to him but he said that the fine was already lodged and that I was best to take a picture of the ticket and appeal the fine. I'm just wondering do I still have to pay the fine while I wait to hear back about my appeal or should I wait until I find out if the appeal has been accepted or not ?

That really sounds like a "Computer says no" response. Hard to believe the ticket inspector couldn't just apply some common sense. Hopefully it's applied to your appeal.

it looked like he lodged it on a tablet or phone but either way he just said to appeal it ?

So you bought a valid ticket, mistakenly presented an old one and accepted the fine for having an invalid ticket despite knowing you had a valid ticket somewhere on your person?

Pardon me for being a bit skeptical.

Fines are not "lodged" until afterwards and are manually processed, not inputed via tablet or phone. If you presented a valid ticket there is no reason why the fine would have to proceed.

I travel so frequently I often have a few return tickets in my bag that I haven't used.. I showed him a ticket that was in date but only valid going from Galway to Dublin and I was travelling in the opposite direction. I then found a return ticket that was valid for a return journey from dublin to Galway and showed it to him but he wouldn't take back the fine

I didn't realise that, he made it seem to me as if he was on my side but there was nothing he could do once he had given me the blue slip 😞

He probably just doesn't have the authority to cancel a fine himself(would be a bit open to abuse). So like he said, just appeal it and it will get thrown out if it's as clear cut as you say. No worries.

Tough sweary crowd here tonight. If you had a valid ticket send it (better again, a copy) in as part of your appeal.

How long did it take you to find and produce the valid ticket. If what you say is correct then the RPU lad was just a *****. I have never come across a situation where a fine was handed out that fast and I have had checks by RPU staff on various lines. Normally if you cannot find a ticket they tend to finish that carriage and come back to a person.

it could be the case that someone in your situation subsequently "finds" his ticket by borrowing his mate's ticket once the Inspector's back is turned. That's why he wouldn't withdraw the fine and why people on here are sceptical.

Why do you have unused tickets in your bag?

If you are appealing then don't pay until you know the end result.

Exactly. If the OP had a valid ticket for the journey, they would have put it though the barrier at Heuston and the date and time it was put though the barrier is recorded on the mag stripe on the back of the ticket.

If the details recorded on the ticket correspond to the journey they took and the ticket lacks an inspector's stamp, then the appeal should be upheld.

Zaph had a word with me yesterday, ta. We agreed to disagree, but that I should do what he said anyway.
