ITV are having a go at copying the American style late night talk shows. It has been tried before in the UK but never with great success.

The Nightly Show will run from Monday February 27th at 10pm for 8 weeks, with a different presenter each week.

David Walliams kicks it off, John Bishop and Gordon Ramsay are signed up for future weeks.

If it does well, it'll likely become a permanent fixture in the schedules.

Which could well mean that the News at Ten name will permanently disappear from the ITV schedules once again...

The first time this happened was in March 1999, when the original NAT was axed after 32 years in order to allow dramas and other primetime entertainment shows to air uninterrupted, with a short Nightly News bulletin following at 11pm.

This was a disaster and so ITV reluctantly revived NAT in January 2001 - but only for three nights a week, and not always at 10pm (resulting in the programme being unceremoniously dubbed "News at When?"). This lasted for three years, before the programme was axed again in January 2004 and replaced with a bulletin at 10:30.

Only in January 2008 was NAT permanently reinstated, airing Mondays to Thursdays at first (with a Late News bulletin at 11pm on Fridays) before going the full five nights in March 2009. During late 2015 and early 2016, the programme was restructured to become somewhat more like Newsnight on BBC2.

The commissioning of this new talk show has inevitably raised questions about ITV's commitment to NAT. However, Robert Peston believes it's good news for the programme regardless - even if the move away from 10pm (and hence the loss of the News at Ten name) does become permanent:
The influential political editor said he hoped the Nightly Show, which is to be hosted by personalities including David Walliams and Gordon Ramsay over the next eight weeks, would succeed in the 10pm time slot it is taking from the News At Ten.

“The simple point is that if it goes incredibly well, then that’s great for the news because it will bring us a bigger audience at 10.30pm. And if it doesn’t, then the truth is we’ll revert back to 10 o’clock,” said Peston.

Thanks Skid, will take a look! :)

Not great so far, to be honest gsw. Considering the schedule changes ITV made to accommodate it the show looks rather cheap and underwritten.

    One particularly cringeworthy exchange

David Walliams (to Kim Cattrall) "Just for fun Kim, how many cats would it take to overpower you?!"

Kim Cattrall (visibly uncomfortable) "Oh, eh ... to be honest my beloved cat just passed away .. I miss her "

David Walliams "Oh I am so sorry, lets move on ..."

    Awkward.

    Bishop this week

I quite liked their handover interview where they discussed how the show needed to do better

This show has been slated in the UK and ratings are poor. I hope it improves.
