Hi, we have to put a balcony rail upstairs outside our bedroom window. We have been advised it had to be a minimum 1100mm with a hand rail. Can I put this up with a hand rail on top. It will be 1500mm in total. Are there any restrictions to the lats being horizontal. Any advise would be greatly appreciated

    That's a pallet.
It will not comply with building regulations.
You cannot put in horizontal rails as it's a climb hazard for children.

I wouldn't certify it and I doubt any other professional would do it either.

If you can prove it and its connection to the wall/ground complies with TGD K and BS 6180 you might find someone willing to accept it/sign-off.

But I doubt you will be able to prove same.

Compliance with TGD Part D also required. Materials used have to be CE marked and fit for use under the Construction Products Regulations, TGD K is the easy bit in my opinion.

I don't think you will get anyone to sign off on it.

Would be interesting to see the Planning and construction drawing of this elevation.

This is obviously a wind up!

Hi Tradesman, no it isn't a wind up, it is a genuine question. But I am glad it amuses you. Considering that the purchasers engineer advised that we can put up plywood to a minimum of 1100mm with a hand rail on top - but thank you for your very informative and helpful comment.

Care to send on the address of the property?
Or at the very least report it to Building Control yourself.

Image and page of the report attached. Thanks.

You can put an internal rail on the window to comply.
The balcony area requires a proper guard and handrail. If you make a half arsed attempt at it and then someone falls, you could be liable in court.

Well we got an engineering company in who supplied and fitted the following balcony as per the building and guideline regulations. It has to be painted and hopefully we are done.

Did you price glass for it?
    Mad money?

Would look great as a glazed screen with stainless steel hand rails or even treated timber.

Couldn't see the woods for the tree's as the man says. I do however hopefully have a logical question. I have been reading up on minimum cills etc and the cill on our window was a min of 600 and we were advised it had to be a min of 800, but we could put a rail up on the inside to a min of 800, which we did - but the gap in between in obviously 200mm, will he say no to this.

As in 200mm from the inside face of the rail to the window face? If so, should be fine.

From the floor to the bottom of the opening of the cill is 600m. We put the handrail up as advised to a miminum of 800mm - then I think I read somewhere that there cannot be a gap of more than 100mm - which there is beween the base of the cill and the base of the rail - so I didn't is there anything else we can do ? Thanks so much - hope it makes sense.

Were you seriously considering using the pallet?
