Car reg query

Hi..just a quick query here. I was on the M50 yesterday and noticed a very odd reg on the car in front. It had a pre 87 old style ZV XXXX..but the car was quite obviously an early 2000's car (Land Rover Disco 2).

Anyway I got a pic of the car and ran the reg through Cartell/Motorcheck and it came back as a 1984 Black Range Rover - clearly not the car that was in front.

Just wondering if there is any reasons why a car would carry an old style reg like that?

It's a modern body on an old chassis to avail of cheap tax I think. It's a popular topic in the classic forum.

It's a lot more likely to be a "Vintage" number plate on a modern car........;).
Much easier to swap a simple chassis plate than find a non-rusty '84 Chassis, and the conversion is not particularly straghtforward.

But I just may be mistaken in this instance :).

well at least it is possible that such a land-rover can be legit by keeping an old chassis.
There are far worse going around - Bmw and Mercedes cars that certainly didn't exist at such a time.

that's what it claims to be. I'd say there's a very good chance the only thing vintage about it is the number plate and the taxbook.

Yeah, new body on old chassis / running gear. I know someone who did this, perfectly legal.

Only if you in fact do the chassis swap.

I'd love to be in the position to spot check these types of conversions...

The whole Discovery chassis 'swap' is a joke anyway.. most are not actually converted, and it just shows
    a) how obsessed we are in this country with cheap tax and
    b) how the system drives people to come up with more ways to cheat the system..

Worst case I remember was a Mercedes SL - model that appeared around 1990 running around on a zv plate 7 or 8 years ago. Jesus if I was a Garda, that would be impounded.
