Quad for taking out thinnings

Hi all,

We'll be taking out first thinning from 12 acres of alder next year. I was thinking of buying a quad to do this, as it'd be a very useful machine around our sheep enterprise as well.

Anyone have recommendations for such a multi-purpose quad?

Well, depending on how much you want to spend, 4wd obviously, probably upper end of power, 400cc or up, good low end power, something like this

Personally I'd stick with a Honda although any newer one is mostly electronic these days, I'd also get a good winch on it.

It's all about the price though!

Hi Siamsa,

May i suggest

For the same price as a quad, you could get a thinning grapple (handy around the yard for timber too)

here's a pic of ours in action

keeps the timber off the ground in smaller loads, so no blunted saws from mud

much more economical to run than a quad

best tool i ever bought for the forest though, has to be the winch (cheap old battered fransgard manual tractor winch)

Must do some more homework on what dealers are around here. Forestry is new to us so not up to speed on who's selling what around the area.
