A6 Starter problem, any diagnostic recommendations?

I have a 2008 A6 which has recently being giving some trouble when starting. The issue is intermittent, worse if the car has been used all week and best if its not used for a few days.

When the ignition key is turned the car may start straight away, or just does nothing, no chugging etc. There are no lights or warning signs on the dash and nothing to suggest it will or wont start.

Had a mechanic look at it as part of a service and he couldn't see anything mechanical wrong with engine, had the keys checked too and they're fine so he recons its an electrical issue and needs a full diagnostic as it could be the engine management system.

Anyone recommend any diagnostic centres around Dublin 12 or had a similar issue?

I thought a 08 would have a start button rather than turning a key.

If it is turning a key... do you carry a lot of keys on that keyring? Sometimes the barrel itself wears and doesn't make reliable repeatable contact when you turn it to start position. I have heard heavy sets of keys being blamed for making that worse.
