    Dublin - Providence/Boston-TF Green /Return/ 3-19 july 140 e

    Great find

Some €140.20 return fares in October.

Dublin to New York (Newburgh - Stewart airport it is worth noting, which is well away from NYC) Saturday 8th -Friday 14th July, *€140 lowfare selection. *€270 lowfare + selections. *Edit - return prices have now changed and gotten about €170 more expensive. €270 now €440.

Worth noting the different low fare options, it seems the cheapest low fare selection has a $ Sign beside checked baggage and seat reservation, meal etc too, whereas the lowfare + doesn't, it says free 20kg checked luggage and free seat reservation and meal.

No cheap fares from Boston to Cork in July or August. Plenty from Boston to Dublin.

Just an FYI those airports are a long ways away from the big city neighbour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 814 ✭✭✭mydiscworld

Looks like Providence/Boston-TF Green (where Cork flies into) is at least 1.5 hours to Boston proper when you arrive

    130 extra return for a meal + 20kg bag.

Are there screens on the plane for everyone? 7hr 45 is a long time without it

Yeah, its worse than Paris-Beauvais. With family north of the city these routes are almost worthless :(

This tells me the train takes 79mins

And to put into Context, O'Hare is 50 mins from Downtown Chicago. Not the worst journey. Price is incredible, especially for my student wallet!

The airports they are going to are so far away from cities that it creates extra stress and cost. Newburgh Stewart is 60 miles away from downtown NYC. People who go to New York know how far away JFK seems to be and Newburgh is triple the distance!

The last thing people want to be doing after a 6-7.5 hour flight is travelling another 60 miles either through various public transport systems or a hugely expensive taxi.

They have checked baggage of up to 20kg which is not included - also not included in these fares is the seat or a meal (usually average at the best of the times but often welcome)

So when comparing to Aer Lingus - a known entity who fly to these areas for 400€ regularly when booked plenty in advance - Aer Lingus bring you closer to the destination, give you a better baggage allowance and from my experience of flying - take decent care of you and provide a decent experience.

This is a bargain for maybe 5 percent of people. For everyone else I wouldn't go near it - completely empty hype.

Yeah the prices of 270 return from Cork with food and a bag is unreal.

But any screen? Not sitting over 7 hours without one, battery on laptop might last 3 hours, don't have an iPAD, can never sleep on those flights!

Got return to NY for 140€ end of September.
Don't really care is far away from the city center.
Got plenty of time to travel.
I could not walk away from that price.

    THX OP!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,323 ✭✭✭Savman

Incredible pricing to be fair, once you know what you are buying into.

Just some things to think about:
8hrs in a 737 - all but the most hardened flier will feel this
The distance to cities when you arrive - as previously mentioned, add up to 2hrs after you land
Food and luggage extra - bring your own sambos

Assuming Norwegian won't be using pre-clearance in DUB? If not, add Customs so you're looking at 3-4 hours from landing to your hotel on the other end, depending on your exact plans of course.

Adding it all up, I don't think I'll be on any of these flights any time soon as EI & DL etc. represent better all inclusive options for transatlantic, but I think most of us welcome the competition.

If its the 737 youre flying on, which is to NY or Boston from Shannon at least, there's no in seat entertainment... Thats a long time to rely on a laptop or ipad...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭CaptivePortal

tried to book one there. got an payment error when I tried to pay.
tried two more times. same error.

checked my bank account. money gone. contacted Norwegian. no record of booking at all.

Yeah i dunno if i could stick a flight that long without the inbuilt movies or watching the little plane move along the flight path :p

The base prices (€69 etc) only include a 10kg carry on. apparently its better value to pay extra for the lowfare+ fare if you want a bag and a meal. Reserving a seat etc is also extra on the lowest fare

They do from dublin, but the price is cheaper with aerlingus and at least you get your meal and screen, albeit still paying for a drink. Cork and SNN they only fly to PVD which is miles away from boston, exactly an hour further away than boston airport according to maps

Guess we're different then, because adding stopovers and layovers and extra time is my idea of a nightmare.

Also rules out the possibility of doing shopping if that's what someone wanted.

People take these fares now but when they land and the reality of being 60 miles away from the place they want to be and all they can do is go through 3 different types of public transport - For €100 euro extra, the comfort of getting to where you want to go in the shortest amount of time with the least stress - it's a no brainer for me and for plenty of others too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42 GoWhest

The flight from Dublin to New York gets in at 7pm, if your using public transport the only NYC bound train I can see after arrival is at 10:17 pm finally arriving in Penn Station NYC after midnight (which would be 5 am if your still running on Irish time) then you have to get to your hotel. This would be a very long day...

To those saying they prefer AerLingus etc. and more direct routes. Remeber that competition is good. This is likely to lead to a price war that will also benefit AerLingus passengers.

I picked up a NYC flight with a return bag for €182.When pricing same flight with any other airline it was over €700 & ive had my eye on this for months .didn't choose a meal because I never eat them anyway and don't mind where I sit .
I chose to go a day earlier and when with extra night hotel and going a bit further than JFK or Newark I'm saving about €400 .also from their website it says they have screens with Tv and movies on long haul flights and even a socket to plug in laptop or ipad .Not to be sniffed at as far as I'm concerned

Plenty of Summer dates are already showing as full so this being of use to 5% of potential travellers is nonsense.
These are amazing prices and you can bet your first born they'll be sold out for the foreseeable future.

I can never understand people (without kids & who are not rich) choosing to go somewhere direct and paying double rather than go indirect for half the cost.
Anytime I go to the US, it's nearly always with KLM/Lufthansa or BA through AMS, LHR or FRA saving around 40% of the price of an EI ticket.
As for bags, entertainment and food - pack light, bring your iPad and a packed lunch.

Going to New York in a Thursday and back on a Monday or Tuesday is much more enjoyable when you go direct. Especially when you use pre clearance in Dublin.
When you look at the list time, extra transit costs , luggage costs etc. You'll understand why people fly direct

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,899 ✭✭✭grimm2005

€270 for return to Boston with meal, check in luggage and seat selection including (very important to me) extra legroom seats is very good. A 90 minute train to the city is annoying but well doable, it just really depends on the cost of the return train.

I personally don't get the issue over lack of in flight entertainment. It's a nice extra but in no way a deal breaker when you have a tablet or laptop and set of decent headphones.

As one of those Aer Lingus (United occasionally) people I agree with this. Can only help consumers having them around.

You see when you fly direct , you can do things like that.

Norwegian Airlines is the only direct flight to the US from Cork if I am not wrong ?

I do agree with your travelling direct ,I always try to do it ,as its more convenient and less tiring .Time is money.
However in this case I have 10 days and the flight is from Cork ,at good times ,and is way cheaper .
You can fly Shannon to New York for 140 euro return in July,Aer Lingus would be 500-600 euro for the same dates ,thats a monstrous difference.

Went to book Cork to Providence earlier and got two adults and a child return fare for €417 all in....just got to payment section and someone called to the door, by the time I got back the page had timed out and when I refreshed, the fares had shot up.

    Gutted

For ten days you'll need some baggage , how much will the flight be including flights, baggage, food and drink and transport to Manhaten.

How much is the comparable flight with Aer lingus, Delta or American Airlines.

How long will it take from the time you leave your house till you arrive in Manhatten?

You wrongly seem to assume that people only want to go to a major city though. Looking at PVD on the map it seems as good a place as any to start a holiday in the Boston area. Its close to Cape Cod for a few days, Boston for a few days and then back to Providence.

Can't believe the begrudgers on this thread!

I'm booked 4 of US to New York for 560 in July!! So what if we have to watch the tablet (and pack some extra power and sandwiches) instead of the in-flight entertainment and the times are sociable hours too. Night flight on the way back and land in Stewart early evening.
Buses go to city centre too.
I am delighted and planning the itnerary!!!

The flights are available to us too?

The reasons have been outlined for why I think it is a poor deal. Baggage costs if you don't take + option, landing in airports far away from desired location, comfort, convenience, customs preclearance etc. If you think it is a good deal then good luck to you. Seems to be a 50/50 divide.

Where is the begrudgery? I'm very confused.

Anyway - best of luck to anybody availing of this deal. Would advise to think before jumping in feet first.

If flying to Stewart in NY, one can get at taxi to beacon which is 15 mins away and then get a train to grand central station costing around €15. I'd put up with the hassle tbh. Only I have four holidays booked between now and July (don't ask) I'd 100% be going.
