No, to watch channels on Sky you require a subscription and their own Sky receiver.

With a standard FTA satellite receiver and dish you can receive a number of free to air satellite channels - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free-to-air_channels_at_28%C2%B0E

That is a list of channels available free from Satellite.

You need a satellite receiver and dish to receive them ..... I have no idea if your 'bt satellite box' is suitable for the purpose (apparently not?).
There are professional firms who will erect a dish and sell a receiver if required.

OP I have never heard of a BT branded satellite receiver. Are you UK based? You might have a BT TV box. That is a hybrid DTT (TV via aerial) and IPTV (TV over phone lines) box and isn't suitable for satellite reception.

I remember they had satellite receivers during the analogue days with Videocrypt for Sky, but don't know of any BT branded Dsat receivers.

You have lots of options to buy a satellite box and dish for the free satellite channels. However you will also need an aerial and suitable TV or box for the Irish (Saorview) channels as these are not free on satellite.

i have an aerial at the moment but the problem is the british channels come and go (the irish ones are ok) thats why im thinking of satellite.
