Alternative National Anthem?

I like our national anthem, and I'm not one of these people who claim it's too "violent" (listen to La Marseillaise, will ye?), but I do think there may be better candidates out there.

    Any suggestions?

Personally, I prefer songs that don't dwell to heavily on the misery and bitterness if national subjugation, but look to the future; in fact that's why the current anthem was chosen. Personally, I prefer A Nation Once Again, for its unambiguous and forward-looking, hopeful, unifying message.

In the interests of balance, I've included some possible alternatives, but please suggest some others, and maybe the mods can add them to the poll.

Danny Boy. Class song that's uplifting and acceptable to both sides.

    "There is an isle".
To those not familiar it is the club song of Shannon rfc.
Words very suitable and has a rousing feel to it at various stages. Members of other clubs may not be too keen on the suggestion but you can't have it every way.....

" Banana Republic " by Bob Geldof.

    Banana Republic, Septic Isle
Screamin' in the sufferin' sea, sounds like cryin'
Everywhere I go, yeah everywhere I see
The black and blue uniforms, Police and Priests

And I wonder do you wonder while you're sleeping with your whore?
Sharing beds with history is like a-licking runnin' sores
Forty shades of green yeah, sixty shades of red
Heroes going cheap these days, price a bullet in the head

    Banana Republic, Septic Isle
Sufferin' in the screamin' sea, sounds like dyin'
Everywhere I go, yeah everywhere I see
The black and blue uniforms, Police and Priests

Take your hand and lead you up a garden path
Let me stand aside here and watch you pass
Strikin' up a soldier's song, I know that tune
It begs too many questions and answers too

    Banana Republic, Septic Isle
Sufferin' in the screamin' sea, sounds like dyin'
Everywhere I go, yeah everywhere I see
The black and blue uniforms, Police and Priests

The purple and the pinstripe they mutely shake their heads
A silence shriekin' volumes violence worse than they condemn
Stab you in the back yeah laughin' in your face
Glad to see the place again, it's a pity nothing's changed

    Banana Republic, Septic Isle
Sufferin' in the screamin' sea, sounds like dyin'
Everywhere I go, yeah everywhere I see
The black and blue uniforms, Police and Priests

    Banana Republic, Septic Isle
Sufferin' in the screamin' sea, sounds like dyin'

I always thought this song was brilliant, especially around the 1916 centenary celebrations last year.

    The Minstrel Boy
Fr Ted's "My Lovely Horse" would be great for a second anthem.

Ireland to Germany: Can I copy your homework ?
Germany: Yeah yeah .. but change it a bit so nobody notices.

    1. Ireland, Ireland above all
    Above everything in the world
When, always, for protection and defense
    Brothers stand together.
From the Shannon to the Lee
From the Moy to the Liffey,
    Ireland, Ireland above all
    Above all in the world.

    2. Irish women, Irish fidelity,
    Irish wine and Irish song,
    Shall retain, throughout the world,
    Their old respected fame,
To inspire us to noble deeds
For the length of our lives.
    Irish women, Irish fidelity,
    Irish wine and Irish song.

    3. Unity and right and freedom
    For the Irish Fatherland;
Let us all strive to this goal
    Brotherly, with heart and hand.
    Unity and rights and freedom
Are the pledge of fortune grand.
    Prosper in this fortune's glory,
    Prosper Irish fatherland.

That's your opinion and you`re entitled to it but others call it celebrating a country`s history.
Amhrain na Bhfian is perfect in my view. I see no reason to change and no outstanding candidate to replace it.

Good luck to the Artane Band playing that, and can you imagine the accapella version being sung around the grounds.
