Finally at 25 it's time I need to get a car. Been insured on my parents car since 2011. I am looking for something small, safe, easy to insure. I don't drive long distances very often - just looking for something to get me around town. Budget would be up to 5000.

Fiesta, Yaris or Micra maybe a Punto.

    Should have added
hire a mechanic to come with you after you decide the car you want. It should cost between 50 to 100 but worth it.

    5k is a nice budget.

I'd be looking along the lines of an 1.4 Astra, Focus, corolla hatchback, Kalos etc.

Shouldn't be too bad on insurance.

Liberty insurance will take into account your four years named driving insurance and should reduce it significantly.

Second vote for the Yaris. Absolutely bulletproof as cars go. Just make sure the service history checks out as although they will take abuse, they arn't a car to go too long after a schedule service. Higher mileages be sure to check the water pumps and belts, they tend to be the only thing that goes wrong with them.

You might want to get insurance quotes in your own name first. Insurance is very expensive especially for someone with no previous policy of their own. Inevitably what you buy will be dictated by what you can afford to insure.

Sticky yaris at the top of the forum?
That one word answers most questions on here

I'd also throw in a micra and a clio. I've owned both as well as my sister and neither of us had trouble with them.

I'd look to spend half the budget on the car and keep half for insurance.
At that price/age of car I'd say the condition of the individual car is more important than the reputation of it brand name.
Something with a bad name like some french cars with some proof of regular servicing and 1 or 2 owners is safer than a Toyota with a different owner every 2 years and no proof it's ever had an oil change.
Get someone who actually knows about cars to view anything with you and make sure to get an insurance quote before you view a car. Last thing you want is to think you are buying a bargain and then find out you can't insure it.

Take note, that those two words in relation to cars pretty much exclude one another.
