To Build or Buy?

    Hi Everyone,

I find myself thinking more and more lately about owning my own home in the future (hopefully!) and just a general question I want to throw out there. Nowadays, is it cheaper to build your own house or to buy? I've always loved the idea of building my own home, building on as you have the money and take a mortgage if needed?

    Thanks :)

Pretty much this. Its also very much location specific.

We bought a house a year and a half ago. At the time we figured it was cheaper, 80k and move straight in. I would have loved to have built as I'm a cabinet maker and cabinet maker by trade and would have liked to have a lot of input in the build.

Depends what you mean by 'build'.

Some people talk about 'building their own house' but in reality they mean to manage the build and organise various tradespeople to come in and do the actual work.

Others get down and dirty and do as much as possible of the actual build. Since labour is a significant cost, substituting your own saves a lot of money.

It depends on your finances and time.

A decent option is to purchase a smaller property, live in it and build on yourself. Or a fixer upper etc., that you can likewise live in. Can be messy living in and around a building that also needs construction work but people manage it..
