Repair, sell, scrap or trade?

    All,
I'm hoping people here can help me out. My car, a 2008 Petrol Audi A4 only went and threw a wobbler at the weekend. The timing belt went while I was driving it. So it needs a new engine.
My dilemma is this, the garage are telling me that the costs will be about €3K but the car will only be worth about €7k to €8k when its done.
    Should I......
    Get the repair done?
    Sell it, as is?
    Sell it for parts?
    Scrap it?
Trade it in against a new car?

Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Get a second opinion on the replacement price.
Consider that the car is worth less than €4k as she stands, so repairing is worthwhile on paper.

Maybe get a price on rebuilding the existing engine too depending on the damaged caused by the snapped belt. An engine rebuild might work out cheaper than replacing.

If you get the work done you effectively have a new engine and so should be able to get another 4 or 5 years driving from the car. No one will buy it as it is unless you literally give it away and you'll get next to nothing as a trade in so in reality unless you are willing to write it off and start from scratch with a newer car then you have no real option but to fix it. It's what I would do in your shoes.

Selling a working a4 petrol would be hard enough.

I wouldn't consider it to be a new engine.

    All,
Thanks for the advice....decided to just sell it as is. Not worth the further risk.

How much do you think it's worth as-is? Or have you already sold it?

3 grand?? Holey moley that's steep. I presume it's the chain that's slipped being a petrol car. A new chain kit + getting the head rebuilt wouldn't cost 3,000.

he said belt in first post and a nice mess would be done at speed valves embedded into head and pistons i reckon,if this was put on long finger what else might have been needed?

Source a used engine would be my advice.
    What mileage is on it?

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

the car will only be worth about €7k to €8k when its done.

The car won't be worth anywhere near €7k when its done. I'd say sell it as is. Will be a nice fixer upper for a mechanic to make a few bob on. Lesson learnt, next time don't forget to change the timing belt when due. Or better, buy a superior car that uses a chain :)

Best of luck & let us know how you're getting on!
