why do people speak like this all over social media these days?

i've seen it three times on instagram by three separate Irish women in the last day alone.

    YASSS QUEEN

    This top is EVERYTHING

    Slay gurl...

    1. They are totally dumb, embarrassing phrases that would make anyone question your intelligence and 2. you are Irish. IRISH. Not American. This is not how we speak in any one of the twenty thousand Irish accents we have on this little isle.

    what the hell?

I don't have a problem with it. Language trends happen in every generation.

I do find it a little bit sad in some ways that globalisation has caused trends to become so homogenous worldwide though and that perhaps, as a result, more colloquial turns-of-phrase become less common, but such are the times we live in.

I have no idea what the opening post is about and have never heard or come across any of those sayings/words but assume that it refers to the youth of today and their ability to change language and accent overnight and expect no one to notice. I fear for our future as I really think the teenagers of today are as stupid as fcuk and aren't capable of thinking for themselves. God help us all.

I'm not on instagram or Twitter. I have a Facebook account that I look at about once a day but most of my friends don't really post anything like that. Just pictures or celebrations or jokes and things like that. There's one or two that post a bit of the passive aggressive stuff and inspirational quotes but that's about it.

I suppose the way people speak on social media spreads.

From talking on forums, I once said to someone when I was speaking directly with them, "in real life" and then I was thinking "this is real life :pac:". I just skipped by it. I don't think they noticed :/:)

Calling female or male celebrities mom or daddy is disturbing. Another one that irks me is this random thing gives me life. The air you breathe and stuff you eat and drink gives you life not some stupid picture that a celebrity puts up.

I've seen people caption pics with "My friends are better than your friends".

When someone says they were "excited af" I just assumed their autocorrect picked it in on them.

Apparently it means "as f*ck". Never struck me as a phrase that needed abbreviating?

    That is all.

There's a dopey young one at work who uses BAE and fleek regularly, she struggles a bit with "there " and "their " and "three" and "tree" too.

Because it's easier and less challenging than finding a more eloquent way to express your emotions, and comes across as non threatening and not too difficult to understand by your less than articulate friends who are the ones most likely to thank it.

I tell you what though, at least the "sure why not?" tag in on facebook seems to have died a death.

"X and Y checked into Pub123, drinking <everything alcoholic>" is still trundling along though.

Alcoholism i'd guess. Bottles of wine divide too easily by even numbers.

Also, i haven't heard 95% of the phrases in this thread....i'm old :(.

A girl I know on FB often posts pics of her mother/father/son/fella and will use captions such as: "My fab Mam #mymamsbetterthanyours" (same applies if it's a pic of her Dad/son/fella).

She also has said "#newhairdontcare", "#girlosforlife", "#smugselfiedontcare", "#vainbitchdontcare" and also says "Yaaass!",

"This batterburger is LIFE", "My new nails are LIT! #slaybitch" and "I am lowkey weak for Tom Hardy".

I am only remaining friends with this girl because one day she will provide me with a post worthy of the Dumb Facebook thread.

In the old days you needed to be computer savvy to log onto the internet. That required a certain level of intellect. Since then....."sigh".

You're all old and blessed to be old.

    Lucky bastards.

My mates girlfriend's housemates are the type of wanker's that say this stuff out loud, it's bad enough typed but it's depressing to actually hear spoken.

It's probably a collective need to fit in. "My arsehole, vapid, empty headed friends say this, I'll say it too so I can seem like them"

What's the saying about empty vessels making the most noise? It's almost always morons saying these things, or they're saying it "ironically". Which is moronic in itself.

I had no idea what this was about until the tenth post (only because I see similar comments on youtube). It's nice to see I'm not missing anything by not being on FB. A lot of these phrases and current sayings pass me by. But I coin my own phrases, so that's better.

"My true love! I don't know if that's sad or a good thing! I'm gonna go with a good thing cuz Beyoncé is life! So much love forever! <3<3<3 I love her so much since NO No No! Lel"

What I don't get is how someone can't understand what basic words like 'random' and 'literally' mean but they can learn dozens of new gibberish words every week.
