XL tyres on front axle. Non XL on rear, bad idea?

Currently my Saab 9-5 estate has 4 Pirelli P7s. One of them is gone now, and the other two still have thread but they are old and sidewalls don't look the best on them so I might as well change them. 1 is fairly new so keeping that.

Looking at my options, thinking of buying another P7 to put on the rear axle with the existing P7.

This leaves me with 2 tyres for the front. Looking at the state of sidewalls on my current tyres, the weight of the car (9-5 estate quite heavy), and the state of the roads around us, it might make sense to use XL tyres.

Is that a bad idea to get a pair of XL for front while the rear is still SL? There isn't much different in price (can be a different decent brand than Pirelli) but not sure if it's a good idea to mix those.

    Any advice?

The reason I am not replacing all with XL by the way is that I have one really good tyre (a few month old) and it'll be a waste to throw it away.

I see no problem here. Get XLs if you want. :)

If you don't plan on carrying very heavy loads then the SL tyres will do perfectly for the job. The load rating is the max rating the tyre can handle, ie when the car is fully laden.
