A quare wee stretch meaning "a big stretch"

I've a theory that this stretch happens every year. I must put a paper together on it to claim priority.

It is not cold so it isn't.

Is it me or does the stretch happen more in the evenings afternoon than the morning? Anyway I love it and the fact it's basically dry and mild as well.

Won't be long now until it's too warm!

Still feels dark with the weather though. This year more than other years I'm aching for even more brightness in the evenings.

Meh. Never mind my grump. I'll go grump elsewhere with my little cloud following me.

Wouldn't moving to the arctic circle make it much worse if you don't like bright evenings?

You wont feel it now till Easter.

Then it won't be long 'till Christmas again, sure may as well have left the decorations up the year will be that quick.

There's a village in Norway (Rjukan) that doesn't have a stretch at all until after March,
They've (In the spirit of Easter Island, Chile) installed 'giant tracking mirrors' so townsfolk can give praise to the Sungod in the meantime.
Sure might be a good idea to for every town around the 53oN and above areas, to get 'better stretches'.

I love the stretch in the evenings seening the first snowdrops and daffodils bud more people making the most of the extra daylight and tne fact that Summer isn't very far away even if it is going to be dull and dreary.

Summer? We still haven't entered Spring yet. And it's dark, damp and cold.

    Patience is a virtue.

I intend to get into the sea more frequently this summer despite there being things in there that want to nip and sting us.

    Ha Ha !

Too late , I've already submitted mine :P

You see I've discovered that things expand when they get hot and contract when they get cold, and there's a good correlation between how warm it is and how long the evenings stretch.

The sunset gets later from Dec 12th, the sunrise gets earlier from Dec 30th.

The sunset gets later from Dec 12th, the sunrise gets earlier from Dec 30th.

Does the Sun(god) not die on the 22nd (solstice) for 3 days, then arise on the 25th? Hence the 'borrowing' of these dates by some religions... So apart from those few days and again in June, it's either moving up or going downwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,705 ✭✭✭Mountainsandh

It's all over the place as far as I can fathom.
Well at least around solstice time, I checked it last winter solstice, and it was a case of gaining 1 minute in the morning, 2 in the evening, then 2 minutes in the morning, nothing in the evening, ...
It was obvious that things pretty much stagnated for 2 or 3 days, but tbh even after checking it out I'm still confused.

But if you look at today, sunrise was 07.49, sunset 17.42
    Tomorrow sunrise 07.47 , sunset 17.44
    Friday sunrise 7.45, sunset 17.46
    Saturday sunrise 7.43, sunset 17.48
    Sunday sunrise 7.41, sunset 17.50
    (took Athlone as an example)

So we're gaining as much in the morning as in the evening, thank f*ck.

Check it out for yourself ? Here http://app.photoephemeris.com/?ll=53.423295,-7.923682&center=53.1529,-7.4148&z=8&spn=1.10,5.11&dt=20170219235600%2B0000

Well he said bright til, not sunset at.

There's 30 minutes of civil twilight after that, which is fairly bright.

Another Northern European Summer, a slate grey cloudy sky with an invisible sun boiling away above it nowhere to be seen, off to Spain later this year for some proper weather.

Its nice to be able to have daylight before and after work. To be able to see the garden on a day other than saturday/sunday.
I would not survive in a northern outreach in winter time.

I remember, a few years back when I worked, going out on a Saturday morning and wondering when a tree in the garden had blown over. Every other day the garden was in darkness for me.

It's a bit of a cliche but it really is a great feeling when the visible signs of Spring arrive like hearing the birds outside or the sound of kids playing out in the lengthening evenings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,131 ✭✭✭misstearheus

I don't know where ye weird fuppers are all livin, but there ain't no grand stretch where I am these days at all! P1ssin' out of the heavens, dark as a Winter's day. Think yez are all tellin' porkies.

Mostly people working inside all day who will do anything to convince themselves that the weather is drastically different outside than as you have described, usually due to the utter despair of their equally dull working day.
