Jury Duty - Can't attend one day

I'm due in for Jury Duty next month. I've replied and said I would be able to attend.

I've now discovered I have an exam on the second day of the jury duty (Tuesday) and won't be able to attend that day as planned.

I'd also prefer not to attend the Monday in case I am called for a case.

Could I contact the courts and ask to be excused for the 2 days and then attend on the Wednesday or will I be struck off for the week?

It is something I was looking forward to doing.

You can get a form filled out I think and get excused by the college when you have an exam. I think that happened to me before I got called twice. I'd contact someone in the college that deals with this sort of thing and who ever sent you the letter.

    Thanks.

Would they just excuse me for the couple days?

Does anyone know if there are trials on a Friday or are cases heard only Monday - Thursday

The jury service asks to attend Mon-Thurs

I may have an opportunity to sit the exam on the Friday.

Are you in full time study? Pretty sure you're exempt from Jury Duty full stop if you are. I did jury duty earlier this month and I'm nearly sure being a student was one of the reasons listed for not having to attend.

I'm really sorry for this but you seem like a very nosey person. Majority of people fear having to do jury duty and your wanting to do it even if it means moving your exams.

Jury service is important for the running of our criminal justice system. Those who do their duty are to be commended. The queries re dates etc are reasonable. Insulting a poster might be taken as an attempt to bully him off this forum

How does that make the OP in any way nosey?

    You're 28. Grow up.

Doing my civic duty doesn't make me a nosey person.

    I'm happy to do it.

As far as I am aware you can be exempt from jury duty being a student. I can't remember what I did but I think I contacted the person that sent me the letter i'd ask if they request a formal letter from the college to excuse you. I'm sure if you can to rearrange your exam date if that's possible if you wish to do jury service its a good experience wouldn't think its a nosy thing. Its random selection how you are chosen anyone could be asked to do it once reached adulthood! You either able to attend or not! Its part of being an Irish citizen to be asked to do it why is it nosy to be asked whether they do it or not?

OP isn't necessarily a fulltime student, she could be scheduled to do a one-off professional exam on that Tuesday.

OP, it's safe to attend on the Monday because if they call you for a case, you can simply declare there and then that you have an exam the following day and they will bump you. They may ask you to come back on Wednesday or excuse you from the panel altogether.

Jury duty is actually quite interesting, I was called last year but wasn't selected, if you are called as a perspective juror you will have the opportunity to give a reason why you possibly can't serve, the judge will then either decide if you can or can't

A couple of excuses given the day I was there.....One guy said that he often falls asleep very easily so was excused, a girl said she couldn't hear very well, judge asked if she could hear him, she said yes, she ended up being the foreperson

I was there for three mornings, wasn't picked, would have loved to have done the week

I respect and admire OP for doing what is an important civic duty.

It is very important that juries should be empanelled from as broad a spectrum of society as is possible to ensure that they are a representative sample of the depth and breadth of society at large. Remember that people like the OP are actually representing us.

It is encouraging to think that OP would take the time to make the effort thus distinguishing herself (presuming you are female as blonde is spelled with an "e" :) ) from those who make fantastic efforts to shirk the task. Otherwise, if there was wholesale evasion of jury duty the danger would be that juries might become unrepresentative. Incidentally, the range of exclusions by right from jury service in Ireland is wide by comparison to some other countries.
